CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Tom Glavine takes his second shot at makinghistory when the New York Mets try and take the rubber game of athree-game series with the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Glavine (9-6, 4.38 ERA) was on his way to becoming the 23rdpitcher in history to record 300 wins in his last start, but theMets' bullpen blew a 2-1 lead en route to a 4-2 loss in 13innings at the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday.


The 41-year-old lefthander allowed one run and two hits in sixinnings, but Guillermo Mota gave up a game-tying double to BillHall in the seventh, ending the chances of Glavine becoming thefirst to reach 300 since former teammate Greg Maddux in 2004.

Glavine may try to and pitch deeper into the game to avoid thesame fate and ensure his milestone. The Mets also may need himto since John Maine was chased by the Chicago Cubs with asix-run third inning in Saturday's 6-2 win.


Ted Lilly benefited from the big inning and limited the Mets totwo runs and seven hits in 7 2/3 frames.


Jason Marquis (8-6, 4.22) will look to follow Lilly's impressiveperformance. Marquis has won three straight home starts and iscoming off a win over the Philadelphia Phillies in which heallowed three runs and eight hits in six innings on Tuesday.

With Saturday's loss, the Mets had their three-game winningstreak come to an end and saw the Atlanta Braves (58-53) climbwithin 4 1/2 games in the National League East.


Meanwhile, the Cubs still trail the Brewers by one game in theNL Central, as the Milwaukee Brewers beat the PhiladelphiaPhillies on Saturday.
