The Celtics agreed to terms with free agent forward/center Scot Pollard yesterday, according to executive director of basketball operations/general manager Danny Ainge. The 6-foot-11-inch, 265-pound Pollard got a one-year deal believed to be worth the veteran minimum ($1.2 million for 10 years service). He adds a much-needed big man to the Celtics' frontcourt and raises the number of players under contract to 12, one shy of the league minimum.
I gotta say, when I read the little headline I thought he signed a 10 year contract for a second there.

He should be well rested as he only played 109 minutes last season.

He was once a 6 PPG and 7 RPG guy in 21 MPG for the Kings

If the Celtics still plan to sign another big man [along with a wing player], then this move is fine. If not, I really dislike it.

If they don't find another player that can take legitimate minutes. However, it seems the only free agents left with some sort of hope are Sweetney, Ely, Skinner and Blatche without desired destinations.

I agree with Premier, if the Celtics dont sign another big man this move is a waste of time, but I am sure they will track down PJ Brown.

Pollard is a heck of a cheer leader
I suspect is body is caput though, or the Cavs would have made some use of him.
If I were the Celtics I'd be looking hard at Brian Skinner and Marc Jackson. I'm actually quite surprised Skinner is still on the market. He's a pretty good defender and on a team with lots of offense like the Celts he'd be an excellent fit.
Jackson is kind of the opposite, but every team could use a 6'10" 260lb guy who can make a shot. Malik Allen could sort of play that role too.

Marck Jackson is a better fit, as Kendrick Perkins will start, creating a void for a post scorer as his backup.
I think you may be underestimating just how good Pollard can be in limited minutes.
He's always ranked pretty high in the newfangled player ratings metrics (hollinger, et al) when he's been healthy. I'm not sure why he didn't get a lot of minutes last year - if it was a debilitating injury and he's not 100% still, then all bets are off. Otherwise, he's going to give Boston a lot in his limited minutes that helps win basketball games.
My $.02

I don't think this deal is a waste if we don't sign another big. Obviously, I'd prefer another big along with Pollard, but this deal is harmless whether we sign another one or not. It's a one-year deal for the veteran's minimum, which doesn't count against the MLE. Pollard gives us another big body that can help defensively and on the boards in small doses, this isn't a bad move at all, and surely not a waste if we don't sign another big.
I would love Brian Skinner, however.

Pollard is a good practice body. I don't suspect he'll be counted on to play any regular minutes. I wonder if Reggie Miller will come out of retirement for the Celtics? If so, maybe they can get Bill Russell also to back up Perkins

As of right now, he is the backup center, and he will play 10-12 serviceable minutes a night. I think Garnett will see some time at the center position as well.
