Day 3 of the Jermaine O'Neal trade saga dawns with analysts believing time is on the Pacers' side. While noting O'Neal's comments leave little doubt that he wants out, John Hollinger suggests that the Pacers can whipsaw the Nets and Lakers--plus any other interested parties--right up to the February trade deadline. Larry Bird said basically the same thing in a radio interview--O'Neal's comment hurt, but the Pacers aren't seeking a deal right now. As for O'Neal, he says he was misunderstood.
O'Neal's Possible Departure Could Help or Hurt Nets - John Hollinger - New York Sun

I still don't understand why Jermaine O'Neal is treated by the media as if he has the clout of a Kobe or a Garnett.

He's nowhere near those guys as a player or as a trade asset.

Another thing I don't get.
If the Lakers trade Odom to get JON, would that make Kobe happy?
That's not even an upgrade. All the Lakers get out of that deal is a bit more defense around the rim.
In every other department they either stay the same or get significantly worse.

Name Power.

I've never understood the JO love his whole career, or all of his All-Star starts. He's rediculously over rated.

O'Neal is an upgrade offensively over Odom, Odom is soft, you have Kobe attacking the rim. Walton playing point forward, something he duplicates with Odom and a Crittenton/Farmar/Fisher trio at the point. O'Neal gives the Lakers another option offensively in the paint, something they do not have. Odom is too soft. As mentioned, if Bird's goal is bynum, he will wait until February.

That's a good point about Walton being able to do some of what Odom does.

Again, though, O'Neal is not a post player and does not draw defenders into the paint.

He is every bit as soft as Odom.

Maybe he's a slight ugrade, but I don't see how he improves the Lakers by more than two or three games.

Kobe probably wants more support than that.

JO is more consistent than Odom and the lakers would have some kind of presence in the paint, which is something they need considering Odom isnt getting them anywhere.

So it's a move for the sake of making one?
It's not Odom's fault the Lakers are poorly constructed. They made a few stupid trades and hamstrung themselves.
Odom is a good player, but only one team in the NBA would trade a true force in the paint for him.
Guess what? The Pacers don't have one so it's not them.

I just see JO and Kobe fitting better than Odom and Kobe. Odom is a guy who works well with the ball in his hands, but Kobe isbetter at it. Put the ball in Kobe's hands and give him a center who can put up very good numbers in the paint and I think the Lakers are a better team.

Odom is a poor second banana for Kobe, but he is a very, very good third banana.
JON is not a center who plays in the paint at all. Not on offense. He would not be a great improvement to the Lakers.
That's why I don't understand why that trade would pacify Kobe. It wouldn't get him any closer to a title.
Maybe if they traded other players for JON (basically impossible) or traded Odom for someone else, but not that particular trade.

From watching O'Neal, he has a good post up paint game. I think O'neal is a better finisher at the basket when Kobe attracts defenders. Lamar catches a pass from Kobe, he spots up a jumper from 8 feet, O'Neal would have attacked the rim and drawn a foul. I think O'Neal can also attract double teams in the paint thus leaving a Walton or Fisher open to spot up.

Maybe in some parallel universe JON is the basket-attacking beast described above, but in this world he is the absolute KING of the short fadeaway jumper.
There is no reason to double him. He shoots a low enough percentage and is averse enough to contact that he can actually be encouraged to shoot by an opponent.
