Following Virginia Tech recruiting must be kinda fun. They never seem to have many high profile HS players, but they always have a handful in the NFL year after year. That's solid coaching.

It can be. But it also can get kinda frustrating, actually. Ireally think theycan do better. Like to see what the coaches can do with really talented players other than the ones they have gotten. </p>

It's not that bad though. Mostof theones up there are, 3 starsbut areso close to being 4 stars with theirratings being 5.6 and 5.7. And I'm loving this class, because they're picking up weapons for Tyrod Taylor in the future with those WRs, and, also, rebuilding the defense with those LBs and DBs. They'll also probably get 3-4 more 4 star kids by signing day.</p>

    </p>

    First half recruiting breakdown</p>

    </p>

For the second year in a row, Virginia Tech made a strong push and pulled in over half of their commitments before even entering August. The Hokies have a remarkable 17 commitments and potentially 10 spots remaining over the next six months. Let's take a look at the commitments already on board.

What follows is the 17 pledges broken down by position, where Hokiehaven believes they'll play once they arrive at Virginia Tech.

    Quarterback: None

    Running Back: One
    </p><table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="left"><tbody><tr><td width="202">[IMG]</td><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Gregory could be a running back or receiver in Tech's arsenal.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>Tony Gregory

Virginia Beach (Va.) First Colonial, 6-foot-0, 178-pounds
Ran for 1,044 yards, 9 touchdowns as a junior
Coach Jae Clark on Gregory's ability: "Tony is a hard, tough kid to tackle and does a really good job of making moves on the run. He doesn't slow down much either when he makes a move. He's tough to tackle, has good breakaway speed and is naturally strong. He also can catch the ball and is a good lead blocker."

Hokiehaven says: Gregory will get his first shot at running back when he arrives in Blacksburg although may get some consideration at receiver. Gregory is a tough, hardnosed runner that can run by a defender. He's shown flashes of excellence and will now get to display it all carrying the full load as a senior.

    Wide receiver: One

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="right"><tbody><tr><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td><td width="202">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Roberts is an acrobatic receiver. </font></td></tr></tbody></table>Dyrell Roberts

    Smithfield, Va., 6-foot-2, 190-pounds
Accounted for over 1,000 yards, 14 touchdowns and eight interceptions as a junior.
Coach Chris Fraser on Roberts' ability: "I think he's a natural wide receiver. This is really good for him because he's a physical receiver with size and speed. He's a fantastic athlete and a big playmaker that we like and I know that's what Virginia Tech liked too."

Hokiehaven.com says: Roberts should get a chance to step in immediately at receiver for the Hokies next year, especially with the departure of four seniors. He is a big, speedy, acrobatic receiver that will go up and get the ball.

    Tight End: One

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="left"><tbody><tr><td width="202">[IMG]</td><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Martin is in the mold of former Tech tight end Jeff King.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>Eric Martin

    Woodbridge, Va., C.D. Hylton, 6-foot-2, 236-pounds
Posted 15 receptions for 210-yards and four touchdowns last season.
Coach Lou Sorrentino on Martin's ability: "What sold Tech was his ability to catch the ball and run routes. Most schools didn't know he was that athletic. He's not 6-foot-5, but he's a good player."

Hokiehaven.com says: Martin isn't a big offensive lineman style tight end, but he is quick and has good hands. He looks to be in the mold of a smaller Jeff King and be a possession receiver that makes plays.

    Offensive Line: One

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="right"><tbody><tr><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td><td width="202">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Via is a very talented offensive tackle.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>Michael Via

    Greensboro, N.C., Northeast Guilford, 6-foot-6, 261-pounds
    No statistics. No coach quotables.

Hokiehaven.com says: Via was one of the fastest rising recruits over the summer. He is a quick, athletic offensive tackle that dominates the line. He is still on the light side at just over 260-pounds, but as he grows into his body he'll become even more devastating.

    Defensive Line: Two

    Isaiah Hamlette

Stafford, Va., Brooke Point, 6-foot-5, 245-pounds
Registered eight sacks as a junior last season.
Coach Jeff Berry on Hamlette's ability: "Isaiah is the type of kid that loves football. He has put on 10-pounds since last year and has great foot speed and terrific quickness off the ball. He also has real long arms making it difficult for offensive tackles to get a hold of him. He definitely passes the eyeball test."

Hokiehaven.com says: Hamlette is an athletic defensive end for the Hokies that possesses good speed and a terrific frame. He is still a bit raw to the game of football, but has the ability to be a stout presence off the edge.

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="left"><tbody><tr><td width="202">[IMG]</td><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Taylor may make the move to defensive end in college.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>Bruce Taylor

    Myrtle Beach, S.C., 6-foot-3, 230-pounds
Missed most of his junior season, but did post 205 tackles, 42 for loss, eight sacks and four interceptions as a junior.
Coach Scott Earley on Taylor's ability: "He led the state in tackles last year (sophomore). He's probably the best player that has ever played for me. He's got good size, good speed, and great instincts; he's always around the ball."

Hokiehaven.com says: Although he hasn't seen the field in almost two years due to injury, Taylor is a terrific talent with excellent speed, size and an ability to make plays. The South Carolina prospect is an outstanding linebacker, but appears to be on his way to defensive end once he gets to Blacksburg due to the need at the position. He is getting bigger and may still need to grow and adjust to the position a bit, but the adjustment period should be short as his speed appears to still be intact. He has the potential in the future to be a game changer.

    Linebacker: Four

    Lyndell Gibson

Virginia Beach, Va., Salem, 6-foot-0, 212-pounds
Registered 108 tackles, 14 sacks and one interception as a junior.
Coach Vinson Pugh on Gibson's ability: "I'm going to tell you the same thing I told Frank Beamer. He is the best player on the defensive side of the ball in the eastern half of Virginia. He's extremely explosive with his hips. We haven't had anybody that can block him. He'll get double-teamed and still make the play. He plays from before until after the end of the play. Overall he's good in coverage too, but his best asset is that he's a great tackler. He does that really well. Nobody gets out of his grip."

Hokiehaven.com says: Gibson is an aggressive linebacker with a non-stop motor. He is a bit on the small side, but makes up for it with his tenacity and ability to make plays on the football. He is a terrific tackler.

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="right"><tbody><tr><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td><td width="202">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Johnson very well could slide right into the starting lineup next season.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>Jake Johnson

Falmouth, Va., Stafford Senior, 6-foot-2, 231-pounds
Posted 125 tackles, 27 for loss, nine sacks and two interceptions as a junior.
Johnson said about his own performance at Virginia Tech's camp: "I think I did very good, there were several backs that got upset when they could not catch a pass against me, one running back was so frustrated he lined up five times to try and catch one on me - and he couldn't."

Hokiehaven.com says: Johnson dominated the first summer camp at Virginia Tech. He has a remarkable combination of speed, size and strength which make him ferocious up on the line and dynamic in coverage. He is already set up to be the heir apparent to take over for All-American senior Vince Hall when he arrives in Blacksburg next year.

    Derrick McCoy

    Amherst, Va., 6-foot-3, 210-pounds
Registered 29 receptions for 900-yards to go along with 70 tackles, seven sacks and two interceptions as a junior.
Coach Scott Abell on McCoy's ability: "He's a big physical receiver that is able to really dominate the competition with his strength and size. He has all the tools and can run. Teams have to double team him and add to that, he is such a physical blocker too. He's hard to stop. He actually leads the team in pancake blocks. Defensively...He's got very long arms and is tremendous in run support. He's also an awesome player in pass defense too."

Hokiehaven.com says: McCoy is a very versatile prospect that could see a spot on either side of the ball once he arrives at Virginia Tech. He's a big receiver that will fight for the ball on offense, but it appears more than likely he'll make the transition to defense at Tech. He has a terrific combination of speed and toughness to be a perfect whip coming off the edge in a blitz or drop back in coverage on a slot receiver.

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="left"><tbody><tr><td width="202">[IMG]</td><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Stephens is a huge, tough linebacker prospect.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>Allen Stephens

South Boston, Va., Halifax County, 6-foot-2, 252-pounds
Recorded 157 tackles, 18 sacks and one fumble recovery last season.
Coach Stan Hodgin on Stephens' ability: "Wow, I've had four players make it to the NFL in my time here and Allen is the best I've seen. He's an aggressive downhill linebacker that is very physical and runs exceptionally well. He's outstanding."

Hokiehaven.com says: Stephens isn't the prototypical linebacker in Virginia Tech's system with a huge 252-pound frame. However, he does possess outstanding speed for that size, 4.6-seconds in the 40-yard dash. He's a very tough, aggressive linebacker that blows up his opposition and consistently makes plays.

    Cornerback: Three

    Cameron Demps

Suwanee (Ga.) Peachtree Ridge, 5-foot-10, 165-pounds
Recorded 56 tackles and eight interceptions last year.
Demps said about his own ability: "(My strengths are) my speed, I've got good hands, and good vision. My junior year went good. I led the city in interceptions."

Hokiehaven.com says: Demps is a talented cornerback with good vision and outstanding speed. He's a bit of a sleeper, but has the skill and ability to make a lot of plays and stand out in Virginia Tech's defensive scheme.

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="right"><tbody><tr><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td><td width="202">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Whitley looks to be the next lockdown corner for the Hokies.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>Eddie Whitley

    Matthews (N.C.) Butler, 6-foot-1, 185-pounds
Accounted for 105 tackles, six interceptions and 12 deflections as a junior.
    No quotables.

Hokiehaven.com says: Whitley is apart of arguably the best defensive backfield in the country at Butler High School. He is a versatile player that will likely make a move to cornerback at Tech, but he could also play safety. He has a nice build to go along with outstanding speed, terrific awareness and isn't afraid to lay a lick on a player. He is a playmaker and very well could be the next lockdown cornerback for the Hokies.

    Lorenzo Williams

    Fayetteville, N.C., Westover Senior, 6-foot-2, 179-pounds
Posted 68 tackles to go along with 11 receptions for 249-yards as a junior.
    No quotables.

Hokiehaven.com says: Williams is a near perfect fit at Virginia Tech. At 6-foot-2, he's a big cornerback in the mold of previous Hokie corners like Jimmy Williams. He has tremendous athleticism and speed due to track and a knack for making things happen.

    Safety: Four

    Xavier Boyce

Virginia Beach (Va.) Landstown, 6-foot-4, 200-pounds
Accounted for over 1,500 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior.
Coach Steve Canter on Boyce's ability: "I can say this about Xavier, he's a very smart player that is a natural leader. He's very good at reading coverage and making quick and correct decisions. He's a very physical guy that covers a lot of ground. He also has very good hands."

Hokiehaven.com says: Boyce is a very versatile prospect that has played all over the field in his high school career. At the next level, he's likely a safety with his huge frame, 6-foot-4, 200-pounds and impressive speed. Due to his quarterback experience, Boyce has terrific smarts and awareness and also is a very aggressive prospect.

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="413" align="left"><tbody><tr><td width="407">[IMG]</td><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Fuller appears to be making a move to safety in college.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>Austin Fuller

    Richlands, Va., 6-foot-2, 210-pounds
Ran for 280 yards and four touchdowns, while hauling in 57 receptions for 1,092 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Coach Greg Mance on Fuller's ability: "Austin has great hands and has scary highlight film. He makes one handed catches, dives for the ball. If the ball is anywhere around him he'll go get it. He's a tough, hardnosed football player."

Hokiehaven.com says: Although Fuller is predominately an offensive weapon in high school he'll likely make the transition to the defensive backfield in college due to his speed. He's fast, but may be just a step slow for receiver. Fuller is a versatile prospect with a terrific frame and knows how to attack the football.

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="right"><tbody><tr><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td><td width="202">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Gouveia's father played for the Redskins.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>Jeron Gouveia

Ashburn, Va., Stone Bridge, 6-foot-2, 180-pounds
Registered 86 tackles and four interceptions to go along with over 500 yards of offense and six touchdowns as a junior.
Gouveia said on his play: "I'm really good at coverage and I can read the ball well. Coach Gray told me that he was very impressed with my performance at the Liberty combine by running a 4.6-second 40 laser. He also liked how I did in my drills."

Hokiehaven.com says: Gouveia has a nice frame and is a playmaker that comes from NFL bloodlines. He is a versatile prospect that will likely make the move to safety in college. He may not have the most speed, but is quick and isn't afraid to mix it up on defense.

    Peter Rose

    Amherst, Va., 6-foot-1, 185-pounds
Recorded nearly 2,000 yards of offense and 29 touchdowns last season. He added two interceptions on defense as a junior.
Coach Scott Abell on Rose's ability: "Peter is a great student athlete with the drive to excel. With his athletic ability he could play a number of positions at the next level. He's a great playmaker. He's a tough hardnosed physical player that makes terrific reads."

Hokiehaven.com says: Rose is predominately a quarterback in high school, but will more than likely make the transition to wide receiver or safety. He's a very versatile athlete that has impressive closing speed which makes him very good in coverage.

Top 10 remaining targets for Va Tech. I think we end up with the top 4. 4 stars Painter and Williams. And borderline 4 stars Tucker and Davis. After that, no clue. </p>

    from rivals.com</p>

It's mid-September and Virginia Tech already has 19 commitments in the 2008 recruiting class. The Hokies have already landed a few of their top recruiting targets including Xavier Boyce, D.J. Coles, Dyrell Roberts and Jake Johnson to name a few.

Although they've had an impressive recruiting run, many of Virginia Tech's top targets are still on the board. With approximately six to eight spots remaining, who is of most importance to the Hokies. Hokiehaven.com will try to answer that question as we rank the top targets left in the 2008 recruiting class.

A variety of players with offers were omitted from the list as they appear to be be showing little interest in the Hokies.

    Hokiehaven.com's Top 10 Remaining in 2008

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="left"><tbody><tr><td width="202">[IMG]</td><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Painter is the most important recruit because he feels a desperate need for VT along the line.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>1. Vinston Painter

Painter's importance to Virginia Tech's class can not be underestimated. Aside from him being arguably the top prospect in the state of Virginia, Painter is arguably one of the most college ready linemen in the Commonwealth in years which is of great importance to Virginia Tech. The Hokies are in desperate need of solidifying their offensive line after struggling there last season and this year. Painter could be a major piece of the puzzle in assisting Tech offensive line coach Curt Newsome remedy the situation.

His pledge would have greater ramifications than that though. It would be all the sweeter for the Hokies to finally go up against mighty Florida and win in a recruiting battle, something that has been tough for the Hokies in recent years on the recruiting trail.

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="right"><tbody><tr><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td><td width="202">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Williams is right up there with Painter in importance for VT this year.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>2. Ryan Williams

Williams is a close second to Painter in importance in the 2008 Virginia Tech recruiting class. The Manassas (Va.) Stonewall Jackson prospect is a dynamic playmaker that has the tremendous combination of power and speed. He's the kind of running back the Hokies haven't seen as he can run a player over or fly by them usually Tech has one or the other. He's a perfect fit in Virginia Tech's run first offense and would be an ideal compliment to starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor. Simply put, Williams could easily be the next great Hokie tailback.

It's hard to say Williams isn't as important of a get as Painter. It's very close and together the two of them could help elevate the Hokies offense to new heights.

    3. Dwight Tucker

The Virginia Tech defense needs some help too and the Oviedo, Fla. defensive tackle would be a huge pick up for the Hokies. His importance in Tech's recruiting class can't be overlooked despite the fact he is being overlooked by most recruiters. A former linebacker just a year ago, Tucker retained his speed and has tremendous discipline. Tucker is a freak of nature with a huge 6-foot-2, 280-pound frame and ridiculous 4.7-speed that few linemen his size possess. He is so quick in fact that he could be considered for defensive end. Either way, he'd big a huge get for the Hokies and provide Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster exactly what he wants, speed, speed, speed.

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="left"><tbody><tr><td width="202">[IMG]</td><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Davis would provide the Hokies a huge playmaking receiver.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>4. Marcus Davis

Davis is a versatile jumbo athlete that could be utilized in a variety of positions for the Hokies. With his huge 6-foot-4, 221-pound frame, the Virginia Beach (Va.) Ocean Lakes athlete could go anywhere from quarterback to tight end, wide receiver or defensive end. I think he's destined to be an offensive playmaker though; it's hard not to want to put the ball in his hands. He would be a huge get for the Hokies and a tremendous receiving target for Taylor that can overpower defenders in the passing game, but also be used on reverses and trick plays as a quarterback. With four receivers leaving after this season, wide receiver is a critical need in this class.

    5. T.J. Lawrence

Lawrence was one of the fastest rising recruits over the summer gaining offers from the likes of Florida and others. The 6-foot-0, 185-pounder has good hands and outstanding speed to pull away from defenders on offense. He's a terrific position receiver. He's also got a knack for being a ball hawk on defense and could very well be a shutdown cornerback for Torrian Gray and the Hokies. Either way, his importance to Virginia Tech is immense as he will make players. He is not only one of the top athletes in the country, but also in Florida. Hitting a home run with one of the top targets in the Sunshine State can only pay dividends with major recruits from the state in years to come.

    <table border="0" cellspacing="0" cellpadding="0" width="208" align="right"><tbody><tr><td rowspan="3" width="6">[IMG]</td><td width="202">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td height="3">[IMG]</td></tr><tr><td align="center"><font size="1">Defensive end is of critical importance for the Hokies and Taylor appears to be the top one left.</font></td></tr></tbody></table>6. Devin Taylor

Virginia Tech has already landed defensive ends Isaiah Hamlette and Antoine Hopkins. Hopkins may very well see a move to the inside and linebacker Bruce Taylor could see a push to end. The Hokies probably don't want to make that second move if they can help it and instead would prefer to go with Taylor, a 6-foot-6, 215-pounder. Taylor is a new kind of end for the Hokies as it appears they are trying to get a more pro-style prospect with a big frame and tremendous wingspan. Add on top of that his impressive speed and you've got an end Bud Foster would love to utilize. He's also in a position of dire need off the edge considering the graduation of Chris Ellis after this season.

    7. Nick Becton

This year Virginia Tech hasn't landed a true defensive tackle, although Antoine Hopkins likely will fill that role. Virginia Tech would love to get some additional help there particularly since they'll be losing Barry Booker, Carlton Powell and Kory Robertson. One player they'd love to get is, Becton who is rising fast on the Hokies charts. He has a huge, wide body at 6-foot-6, 285-pounds and decent speed. Defensive line hasn't been the easiest spot to recruit for the Hokies and Becton could be a major upgrade to the position for years to come.

Bobby Massie

Massie is an important target for the Hokies, the only reason he's dropped so much is because of his academics. It seems likely he's headed to prep school and that means Tech would have to wait for his services. Nevertheless, Massie is a beast who moves incredibly well for a man that is 6-foot-8, 335-pounds. He's quick on his feet and could be a dynamic tackle for Tech. If the last couple of years have proved anything it's that Tech needs help along the offensive line, especially at tackle where they'll lose Duane Brown after this season.

    9. A.J. Alexander

Virginia Tech needs a playmaker at receiver and there are a variety of players that could fill that position. Marcus Davis appears to be the most important receiver on Tech's list with his size and speed followed by Lawrence, but since the tide appears to be turning on both of those. Alexander is another one the Tech staff is very high on as he possesses incredible 4.4-second speed and a solid frame 6-foot, 180-pounds. Alexander could very well fill the role left by graduating receiver Eddie Royal in the offense and also be a terrific return man.

    10. Malcolm Johnson

Rounding out the group is yet another receiver, Johnson out of Bartow, Fla. Following the top three of Davis, Lawrence and Alexander, the 6-foot, 149-pound Johnson is next on the list. He has tremendous speed and is a gamebreaker. Tech is clearly in need of a breakout receiver due to the loss of four seniors after this season to join Dyrell Roberts. The need is even greater since Derrick McCoy may have to make a switch to defense at the next level and D.J. Coles will likely have to least prep.

Virginia Tech is still looking at plenty of other recruits including Ben Barber, Kevin Whaley, Justin Gilbert, Marty Everett, Everett Dawkins and Quinton Coples.</p>
