Max Roach was one of the greatest drummers of all-time and arguments could be made that he was the greatest. There aren't many who could give this man much competition. Buddy Rich. Perhaps Louie Bellson. There's no doubt that Max Roach was a Jedi Master only he didn't require any mind tricks. His ability was practically peerless. If you don't have any of Max's music, let me suggest a few discs. The Quintet - Self Titled. The Quintet is a plain looking disc and when I came across it in a used CD store, I almost put it down until the names caught my eye. Charlie Parker - Sax, Dizzy Gillespie - Trumpet, Charles Mingus - Bass, Bud Powell - Piano and Max Roach - Drums. Holy Crap! What a lineup! I also have a disc, Buddy Rich vs Max Roach, which I highly recommend. How can you lose with those two drumming on the same disc? Great stuff.
