Sanchez, LaRoche lead Pirates past Phillies

PITTSBURGH 11, PHILADELPHIA 6
PITTSBURGH (Ticker) -- If there has been a silver lining to thePittsburgh Pirates' continued struggles over the past few weeks,it's been the hot hitting of Freddy Sanchez. On Saturdaynight, the defending National League batting champion proved hisworth yet again.

Sanchez collected three hits, including a two-run homer, andfell a triple shy of the cycle as the persistent Pirates postedan 11-6 comeback victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

It was the team-high 28th multi-hit game of the season forSanchez, who has hit safely in 20 straight contests and ishitting .357 (30-for-84) over that stretch.

While Sanchez was key in helping Pittsburgh win for just thefirst time in five tries against its intrastate rivals, it was aformer teammate who ultimately gave the Pirates the win.

With the scored tied at 6-6 in the fifth inning, a costlythrowing error by Phillies third baseman Abraham Nunez gave thePirates their first lead.

Xavier Nady led off the inning with a single and went to thirdon Adam LaRoche's double. Both runners scored as Nunez fieldeda grounder by Ronny Paulino and hurried his throw, sailing theball over first baseman Ryan Howard's glove and into the stands.

Two batters later, Jack Wilson successfully executed a squeezeplay to score Paulino and put the Pirates in front, 9-6.

Pittsburgha added two runs in the eighth, when LaRoche deliveredan RBI single and pinch hitter Josh Phelps drew a bases-loadedwalk.

It was a hard-fought win for the Pirates, who came back from afour-run deficit in the first inning and a two-run margin in thefourth to improve to 9-8 this month and 3-4 on their currenthomestand.

Philadelphia appeared on its way to its ninth win in 12 games inthe early going.

Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a double and scored on atwo-out single by Howard. After Aaron Rowand followed with abase hit, Jayson Werth belted a 1-1 offering from Pittsburghstarter Paul Maholm into the left field bleachers to give thePhillies a 4-0 lead.

Pittsburgh bounced right back, however, countering with fourruns in the bottom of the inning as each of the first fivehitters reached base against Jamie Moyer (11-9).

After Jose Bautista walked and Sanchez singled, Jason Bay hit aground-rule double to left field, plating the Pirates' firstrun. Making his first start since July 31 because of injuredhamstring, Nady singled to score Sanchez and LaRoche followedwith an RBI double, reducing the deficit to 4-3.

Moyer finally registered an out when Paulino grounded out toshortstop, but Nady scored on the play to tie the game.

The Phillies quickly regained the lead as Pat Burrell launched atwo-run shot - his second homer in as many nights - in thesecond.

It was the team-high 28th multi-hit game of the season forSanchez, who has hit safely in 20 straight contests and ishitting .357 (30-for-84) over that stretch.

"When you become the type of hitter that he's become, he canstep away from something and realize what it is that he wasn'tdoing and he should have been doing," Pirates manager Jim Tracysaid. "When he (stays in the strike zone), he's as good anoffensive player that there is in our league, as far as bat toball and driving the ball to all parts of the field."

While Sanchez was key in helping Pittsburgh win for just thefirst time in five tries against its intrastate rivals, it was aformer teammate who ultimately gave the Pirates the win.

"All through the course of this homestand, we've swung the batsvery well," Tracy said. "Some of these games that we've won,we've obviously had to do it the hard way, and that's comingback and coming back after having been hit early. We're comingthrough with some big hits. It's just really good to see."

"I think everybody believes in themselves on this team," Nadyadded. "It's encouraging to see guys have better at-bats. It'sbeen an up-and-down season. Hopefully, we can kind of putthings together and be encouraged for next year."

"It's just one of those things that the pitches were hittableand just up a little bit," Maholm said. "I think everything wasfine, I just think I was barely missing up (in the zone), andthey took advantage of it. Give credit to our offense. It wasanother great job by them. I'm just glad I was able to stick itout and not spoil it."
