"A couple of balls just found a hole," Kendrick said. "I justhad to bear down and keep the team in the game. It was nice toget a win tonight."

Kendrick (6-3) allowed four runs and seven hits with two walksin 6 2/3 innings. J.C. Romero got the final out of the seventhand Tom Gordon pitched a perfect eighth before Brett Myers cameon in the ninth to record his 12th save.

"This team has got that edge," Myers said. "The teams that havebeen here in the past four years haven't really had that edge.It just seems that the will to win is here more this year thanit has been in the past."

The shot by Loney cut the Philadelphia lead to 5-4 as Tomkosquandered his early lead. After he retired the first sixbatters he faced, Tomko ran into trouble in the third.

"Somehow all you do is keep fighting," Howard said. "The onlything that you can do is keep yourself in the game and giveyourself a chance to win. That's what we've been doing and takeadvantage of it as much as possible."

"They pieced together some hits and scored some runs," Tomkosaid. "Rowand hit a two-run homer and the last inning. I gotmyself in a jam and didn't get out of it."

Tomko loaded the bases in the fifth on a pair of singles and anerror on third baseman Shea Hillenbrand, then he gave up abases-loaded walk to Pat Burrell.

"I thought that one of them was a strike," Tomko said. "I'vestill got to make a pitch after that if the count is 3-2 withthe bases loaded. In my eyes of those pitches was a strike. He(home plate umpire Fieldin Culbreth) called them balls. He makesthe calls and decisions and I was walking off the field."

Mark Hendrickson came on to get Ryan Howard on a pop up toshort. He then struck Aaron Rowand and got pinch hitter WesHelms to fly to right.

"It's a very big win," Rollins said. "The way everything islined up right now, if we win, we gain on somebody. It doesn'tmater against who, the point is to get a game. Now, we're tiedfor the wild card lead. It's better to be tied for first than tobe behind everybody."
