Stewart's grand slam powers Rockies past Pirates

COLORADO 9, PITTSBURGH 2
DENVER (Ticker) -- Ian Stewart made his first home run amemorable one.

Stewart blasted a grand slam and Elmer Dessens and TaylorBuchholz combined to pitch eight solid innings to lead theColorado Rockies to a 9-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates onTuesday.

Stewart sent a 2-1 offering from Pirates starter Tony Armas(2-4)just over the left-center field wall to give the Rockies a 4-1lead in the third inning.

"I was just trying to get one or two runs in and was able to geta good part of the bat on the ball," Stewart said. "Afterthat, everyone kind of got hot and this was a good win for us."

Yorvit Torrealba and Jamey Carroll led off the inning withback-to-back singles. After Dessens' sacrifice bunt, RyanSpilborghs drew a four-pitch walk to set the stage for Stewartto deliver his first career homer.

The 22-year-old rookie became the second player in franchisehistory to hit a grand slam with his first career blast. Thefirst was Jim Tatum, who accomplished the feat on May 4, 1993.

"It was great," Stewart said. "For the first home run to be agrand slam is pretty special. I'm just trying to go out thereand play and have fun and there will be more to come down theroad."

Playing in just his eighth game, Stewart is now 4-for-12 (.333)with six RBI in his major league career.

Dessens gave up two runs on six hits and three walks over 4 2/3innings before Buchholz (6-4) entered to pitch 3 1/3 scorelessframes.

"He has retired the last 15 batters he has faced going back toLA," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said of Buchholz. "He'spitching like he is comfortable out there and that is goodenough for me. His actions speak louder than words. He pitcheswith a lot of confidence."

Buchholz, who retired 10 of the 11 batters he faced, inheritedtwo baserunners in the fifth inning but was able to get JasonBay to pop out to end the threat.

"I've been locked in lately," Buchholz said. "I'm working thefastball in and out and mixing in the curveball once in awhile.I just came in to eat up innings for the bullpen. I was tryingto keep the pitch count down and get guys out."

Matt Holliday belted a solo shot as part of a three-run fifththat opened the Rockies' advantage to 7-2.

Rookie Troy Tulowitzki and Brad Hawpe blasted back-to-back homeruns in the seventh inning for a 9-2 lead. It was the secondtime this season the Rockies have hit back-to-back homers, thefirst coming on June 15 against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

"Troy is a great young player," Pirates manager Jim Tracy said."Once he gets more familiar with all the pitchers, he will doreally well. It looks like he is having a lot of fun outthere."

The four home runs were a season-high for Colorado, whichavoided a three-game losing streak.

Armas hurled 4 1/3 innings, yielding seven runs and eight hitswith three walks and four strikeouts as Pittsburgh had athree-game winning streak snapped.

Nate McLouth gave the Pirates an early 1-0 advantage in thethird with his eighth home run of the season.
