I wanted to open up a post on Jake Peavy and what people think he is worth considering he will be eligible for a new contract after next season. This story got a lot of pub in San Diego this week because of a local article revealing Jake's disbelief that the Padres will resign him for a deal that is fair for his ability compared to other MLB clubs....

Zambrano got 5/$91M, and Peavy's worth way more.

    Maybe 7/$140M?

He has different value to different teams. He is worth most to yankees. So he will sign there, cuz it is all about the money. If padres offer him 50M and he turns it down for more somewhere else it is obviously all about the money. He doesnt need more than 50M. That being said. 5 years / 100 million

Yeah he is worth more than Zambrano, and I think ghoti could be right. The losers in the Santana sweepstakes will have tons to splash on Peavy.

Yeah I think Peavy is worth a lot of dough.

I like Zambrano but I like Peavy more. Zito was going to rip off before he signed. I think everyone saw it but the Giants! LOL! Glad the padres didn't get in on that bidding war...

I think the Padres will step up and offering Peavy something like 6 yr / 115 - 120M and might be able to land him. I live in San Diego and there is something to be said for quality of living. San Diego has that and an organization that has been to the playoffs for the last couple years. The teams that won the WS the last couple years haven't been NY or BOS. I see less appeal for Jake to go there unless the money is that much of a difference.

    Thanks for the welcome.

Lets wait and see. I think the Padres will tie him down in the middle of next season or even maybe this off season to a long term deal.

I am hoping! Fingers crossed, Peavy is the man.

I think the Padres will resign him. He's one of those rare pitchers even cheap owners don't mind spending money on. I hope so at least, I don't want him in the AL, especially in the east!

PS, the community is great. Stick around and you'll get hooked.

What did Gil Meche get? Wasn't it more than $50 mill?

I think Meche was for 4/$40mil...I think I remember Lilly and Meches deals were the same....Peavy will be free at the age of 28, so about 15 teams will fax his agent a contract with 5 years and _ _ ,000,000 per year written on it and let the agent fill in the blanks....

Peavy is worht a ton of money at least 110 mil. I also cant see the Padres letting him walk or trading him, because not only did they build their team around him, but they built Petco around pitching, which back then was Eaton, Peavy, and Oliver Perez. The Padres are going to need pitching to win, because they will never attract superstar sluggers to play in Petco, so I cant see them not giving Peavy the cash.

I agree with TucsonClip. Pads have to sign Peavy there is a lot of HEAT that the Padres MGT is under right now because of their lack of capital committment to get more high caliber players.

It isn't easy being an MLB team balancing payroll, competitive team, investors and business model....
