<div class="pre">EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- The final result</div>mattered less than the strong first half by the New York Giants.

The New York Jets won the preseason game, 20-12, on Saturdaynight, but more telling was the solid performance of Eli Manningand the Giants' first-team defense through the first 30minutes.

Manning completed 17-of-25 passes for 233 yards, including a5-yard score to rookie wide receiver Anthony Mix with just 27seconds left in the first half to give the Giants a 12-6 lead.

Overall, the Giants' quarterback directed his team into scoringposition on three other occasions, but kicker Lawrence Tynes wasonly able to convert one of those as he missed field goals from40 and 43 yards. Tynes finally split the uprights from 40yards with 3:44 left in the half.

The Jets got on the board quickly when, on the first play fromscrimmage, Chad Pennington hooked up with running back LeonWashington for a 79-yard scoring pass. The extra point wasblocked by defensive tackle Fred Robbins.

That would be the lone bright spot on the night for Pennington, who finished 5-of-11 for 89 yards in one half of action. Thequarterback did not lead his team to another first down over hisensuing five drives.

The Giants got on the board in the second quarter when Jetsdefensive back Rashad Washington was called for holding in theend zone during a punt, resulting in a safety.

The Jets took a 13-12 lead in the second half on 16-yard scoringrun by rookie Danny Ware, then scored on their next possessionon a 1-yard plunge by backup quarterback Kellen Clemens.

Clemens hit Justin McCareins for 45 yards and Brad Smith for 34yards to set up his rushing touchdown. The second-yearquarterback completed 6-of-8 passes for 122 yards, but was alsointercepted once.

NFL: NY JETS (1-1) at NY GIANTS (1-1)

<h3>Resurgent Giants seek third straight victory</h3>

NY Jets (1-3) at NY Giants (2-2) Sunday 1:00 pm EDT

<div class="pre">EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- For the last six quarters,</div>the New York Giants' defense has shown no resemblence to the unitthat was torched in the first two games of the season.

The Giants look to continue their suddenly stellar defenseSunday when they host the New York Jets in the "Battle of theMeadowlands."

In season-opening losses to the Dallas Cowboys and Green BayPackers, the Giants surrenderd 80 points - the most points theyhave allowed in the first two games of the season since 1966.

The Giants continued to struggle in the first half against theWashington Redskins two weeks ago, falling behind 17-3 athalftime.

But since then, the Giants' defense has enjoyed a dramaticreversal, allowing just three points. It started with a lategoal-line stand that preserved a 24-17 victory over theRedskins.

The Giants carried that momentum into last week, when they tiedan NFL record with 12 sacks in a 16-3 victory over thePhiladelphia Eagles.

Osi Umenyiora set a franchise mark with six sacks as the Giantsfrustrated an Eagles team that had scored 56 points the previousweek against the Detroit Lions.

In the first 10 quarters of the season, the defense was on thefield for 31 possessions, allowing 1,025 yards and 13touchdowns.

In the last six quarters, the unit has yielded only 271 yards in18 possessions and no touchdowns.

"It is just the ongoing process," coach Tom Coughlin said of theimproved defensive play. "That was something that was in itsinfant stages as we were coming along in terms of some of theutilization of personnel in different spots. At one point wewere able to go and advance that a little bit more and we willcontinue to do that."

While the Giants have won two in a row to climb back to .500,the Jets are searching for answers after a disappointing 17-14loss in Buffalo.

The Jets may be looking to open up their offense. They were heldto 14 points last week, even though Chad Pennington completed32-of-39 passes for 290 yards.

The co-tenants of Giants Stadium are meeting for the first timesince 2003, when they Giants posted a 31-28 overtime victory. The Giants have won three straight against the Jets to take a6-4 lead in the series.
