Chris Mortenson reported on ESPN Countdown that Wayne Heiznega has contacted Daniel Snyder about taking over Steve Spurriers $5million deal, and naming Spurrier the coach of the Dolphins......Im torn up about this....1st, I think Spurrier could have success in the league, but I know if he comes to Miami, thats the end of Ricky playing here....I dont know how to feel about this....I do know, Fiedler cant run Spurriers system, he would be killed dropping back that many times....that move could be potential devastating to the franchise, or it might work wonders for a team thats rarely agressive, and never takes chances....
Wow, I think that would certainly bring big change to the Dolphins. But I'm not sold that it fits the personnel. I think if Spurrier is going to be successful quickly he needs to go somewhere that has good receivers that can spread the field and a more than capable Quarterback. If Miami can bring in a good QB, it might work, but I don't think Fiedler's that guy.
I have been thinking about Spurrier for an hour now and a few things occured to me....the Dolphins have some offensive talent that fits the Fun n' Gun, Chamber and Thompson and McMichael would fit(Chambers would fit any system, and Thompson had his best year in Spurriers offense), Travis Minor has the skills Spurrier wants in a back, he can catch and hes fast, the Dolphins have some young undersized lineman that could be good pass blockers, like Wade Smith, Billy Yates, Seth McKinney....assuming they could get multiple high picks for Ricky(that should be easy to get), they could rebuild in a hurry...they would need QB that can play the system, they would need a few more lineman and another WR, but I cant see why this couldnt work....The defense also needs some revamping, but if the offense ever got decent, the Defense would take care of it self.....
McKnight is blazing fast as well, if he could just get some stick-um for Christmas. My team plays in the AFC. I would vote for Spurrier in Miami!
If Wayne hires Spurrier, I'm going to throw up. Then, I might have to look for a new favorite football team. How bad do I hate Steve Spurrier? I would rather keep Teflon Dave than have Spurrier as head coach. Could someone pass the malox?
I have no problem w/ Spurrier but don't think he'll come back & coach in Florida. I think both he & Snyder realize that next year is the make or break yr for 'the Skins. Had John Clayton passed along this info on Sports center during the week, there might be some truth to it. But, Mort & the rest of ESPN's Sunday morning crew are nothing but enteretainment & rumor mongers. Denny Green will be Oakland's next coach and Lovie will land in Atlanta. Leaving Miami with...?
I have a huge problem with Steve Spurrier. He blows chunks as an NFL coach. He hasn't done one stinking thing to the make the Redskins a better team. In fact, he may have helped make Panthers a playoff team by giftwrapping and delievering Stephen Davis to them. I just can't understand what Wayne would see happening in Washington that he wants to bring that to Miami. Please let this not be true.
Consider that many coaches fall on thier face with thier 1st teams, but learn from mistakes and excel at thier 2nd job(Belicheck comes to mind)...because of that, Im not that down on Spurrier, because I know hes smart, arrogant, and he loves winnin'....all he wants to do is call ball plays that score toughdowns, so if the Dolphins do end up with Spurrier, I will give him a chance atleast...we will know if hes learned his lesson right away, if he keeps Ricky aboard, he learned from the Stephen Davis mistake, if he trades him and gets good value, its a question mark...if he just lets him walk, then he didnt learn crap and the Fish are in trouble....I dont know if its gonna happen, but I think we will get a better sence of it this week, when the rumors start to fly
Dale I agree with your statement "He blows chunks as an NFL coach" Spurrier is the Rick Pitino of the NFL. He should have stayed in college. The guy is blatently out classed by the coaches in the NFL. I would love the Dolphins to get another inferior coach like Wanny so belichick can play mind games with him twice a year.
Remember that 5 years ago Belichek was a guy who couldnt succeed without Parcells....Dick Vermeil couldnt deal with todays players....Don Shula was once the "bonehead" that coached the Colts to the wrong end of the biggest upset ever(Super Bowl 3)...the Bucs couldnt win in sub 40 degrees weather....the bengals and rams were hopeless....the point being that things change....sometimes a change of scenery can do wonders for a coach....Spurrier has struggled mightily in Washington, but I have to think hes learned from it, and a fresh start might do him a world of good...I dont think the guy just forgot how to coach after all the success hes had....under the right circumstance, Spurrier could be a success in the league, but it may take his 2nd job to see that....Id be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt, if he wanted to give it another try in Miami...
He never had sucess at the NFL level. He had sucess in college cus he had the best players. He had that advantage going into 80% of the games he coached. It's alot easier to just throw it around when you players are superior in every way. I agree things change and belichick was the guy who sucked in cleveland. But at least he had experienced some success in the NFL as a Coordinator and had a chance to learn from one of the best coaches EVER in the NFL. Spurrier is to cocky to realize his Fun -N- Gun bullshit will not work consistently in the NFL and the idoit let stephan davis go and look how that turned out. What would you think if he ran ricky out of town? I will say though in todays NFL you just never know but if I was the Phins I'm not sure spurrier and 5 MILLION is worth the gamble, because essentially thats what he is.
