Lets say the opportunty presented itself to walk away with a large sum of money($10mil+), and the crime will remain unsolved until your 50th birthday....at that time though, you will be arrested and tried, facing overwhelming evidence....would you do it? Im curious who might forsake the distant future for an unbelievable present....

I doubt anyone other than you and your immediate family value your freedom any more than a 100k....thats just the reality of the world we live in....and this is a no violence hyporthetical, its entirely white collar

I'd have to say no on that one. That's a lot of money, but it's not the sort of money that's completely unatainable or anything.

I mean, if I really busted my ass for 10 years, worked 80 hour weeks, didn't see my kids, etc etc... I don't have any doubt I'd come up with that much or more. And I'd still do it more comfortably than having a lengthy jail sentence hanging over my head in several years.

In any case, I'd rather have less but have the time with my friends and family.

First, i want to say, that i do believe the question is ethical. There is nothing unethical about asking it.

I couldnt answer unless i knew what the crime was. i would have to know what kind of effect my crime would have on other people

Isn't it a bit unrealistic that you can get 10 million and have that case not be solved in 30 years? Like, statute of limitations? I'd take the money, invest that, and then let my lawyers have a field day on my 50th bday

Its not about the realism of the question, its about the decision itself....would you risk your golden years to be really rich from now until then?

Yeah...too bad you will be caught for tax evasion well before you get caught for the theft of the money, so you have that, and then they will catch you for the theft of the money when they get you for your tax evasion (unless you admit to selling drugs to get the money as a cover up)....so you'd be in jail a long time, and then by the time you get out for that, you won't have before long before you get charged for the theft of the money (since you'll get caught for that at 50).

In addition, I wouldn't steal it. If I found it, and it went unclaimed after so long, I'd keep it, but stealing it is just dumb.

Swiss bankaccount? Offshore accounting? Ok sorry for overanalyzing the topic, but I was raised by lawyers.

I would not take the money. I believe in the future I will have as I stand today, and could not bear the impact getting arrested would have on my newly-adult kids

I would not do it....I think living a free happy life is more important than havin $10 million for 3 decades then going to jail for basically the rest of my life.

I would take the money, invest it, and when the time would come to face the law, hire the best lawyers on earth (you'd have the money to do it) and plead not guilty. [IMG]

    Hehe.

    People aren't getting it.

You can hire the best lawyers and you're going away anyway. That's the deal.

I'd pass. I'm already close to 50 as it is [IMG]
