Arizona starter Micah Owingsmatched Maddux for seven innings, yielding one run on threehits. The rookie righthander got off to a rough start though,allowing the first three runners to reach base before strikingout the next three to escape unscathed. "I kind of put myself in that situation, so I was just trying towork one in there," Owings said. "I grew up watching (Maddux)my whole life. I have the utmost respect for him. You'retalking about one of the best ever, in my opinion. Seeing himfirst-hand and being on the other side was an honor." The Diamondbacks strung together three hits in the third to jumpout to an early lead against Maddux, getting one run on adouble by Chris Young. "We had some opportunities, but (Maddux) made some pitches whenhe had to," Young said. "They were a little bit better abouttheir situational at-bats and getting bigger hits. We had ouropportunities; we just couldn't cash in on them." San Diego answered in the bottom of the frame when Giles belteda solo shot to right field - his eighth of the year and first atPetco Park - that evened the score at 1-1. Young added twohits for Arizona, which has lost three straight. Giles had three hits on the night as San Diego won for theseventh time in eight games. "This is the way this division has been the last couple ofyears," Giles said. "Nobody is really going to run away withit. We're just happy to be playing well now, and we have ahistory of playing well in September."
