Ferdinand, Nesta, Lucio? I don't know who is the best. I think Sergio Ramos will eventually become a quality player, and also Vincent Kompany becoming great defenders. United's back four dominating the EPL, with probably the best defence in Europe at the moment. Terry, Nesta, Ferdinand up there with the best definitely, but what do you think?
Ferdinand? No way. Terry, Nesta yes. But seriously, in every post there is no need to bum man utd? Get a grip. Ferdinand lacks passion. Something which Terry has. Carragher also has passion but maybe isnt as skilled as Ferdinand.
Cannavaro was great at the world cup but he hasnt showed it this season Puyol lacks pace but he his the best for me or Nesta
Terry. he has that extra drive and determination that only come from playing for the club that he supported. Others have that but he has the skills as well. how many did goals did Rio get last season?
Nesta? No from me, use to be one of the best however not now. The best in the world consist of <ul> [*]Terry [*]Puyol [*]Cannavaro [*]Gallas [*]Ashley Cole [*]Zambrotta [*]Carvalho [*]Gary Neville [*]Rio Ferdinand
Not in any order that list by the way, just the names of the best defenders in the world (IMO). Ones for the future: <ul> [*]Ramos [*]Kompany [*]Eboue [*]Lahm [*]Vanden Borre [*]Micah Richards [*]Huth
And that one not in any order either If you would want my star defence it would be: ----Zambrotta----Cannavaro---Terry---A.Cole----
<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">30: Vincent Kompany, Anderlecht: Already the biggest clubs in the world are hunting for this young fellow. Kompany reads the game so good that you have to question yourself whether he doesn't cheat on his age. 29. Sylvian Distin, Manchester City: Can Man City keep their French starlet? Or will Arsne Wenger bring home a dream partner for Campbell? Distin is fast, thinks fast and is one of the best markers in the world. But he has to work hard on his strength, he is too weak compared to other top central defenders. 28. Luis Perea, Atletico Madrid: Perea has 1 mission, to destroy! Maybe the one of the toughest, strongest and yet one of the fastest defenders in the world. His only game plan is physical play. Sadly for Perea is that he came to late to Europe, maybe it’s too late for him to make a big name for himself. 27. Marco Materazzi, Inter: In Materazzis world everything is allowed in football. Maybe the dirtiest player in the game. You can even sometimes see Materazzi is looking a fight in a game. No one will forget Materazzis tackling on Zlatan Ibrahimovic where he went in the tackling just to hurt him. 26. Chris, Lyon: If Chris only could read the game better he would be a lot higher on this list. 25.Dario Dainelli, Fiorentina: The man that controls Fiorentinas defence this season is Dainelli and one of the biggest reasons why Fiorentina is doing so well. Dainelli can read the game pretty well, his pace is better then many strikers he plays against. He has also good technique that helps the team to build up the attack much more often. 24.William Gallas, Chelsea: He can play all over in defense: right left, centre you name it. Makes very few mistakes. A lot of people used to compare Gallas with Thuram. Gallas is today 28 and has still a long way to go. 23. Gabriell Milto, Zaragoza: He is a fantastic defender on a good day. He has it all but he can make the craziest mistakes, which makes him very similar to Nosrati. 22. Ledley King, Tottenham: King is getting better and better each year. But if he wants to be a new Campbell the next step will be huge for him. He has to join a big club and play a major role in their defence. If King wants to be one of the best he has to play in the Champions League. King is a fast defender that very few Premiership strikers can run past. 21. Ricardo Carvalho, Chelsea: How long more can Carvalho take it at Chelsea? For how long will he accept the rotations of Jose? As long as Carvalho plays alongside Terry no one will remember his name. If he wants to make a name for him self he has to move to a club where the defence is built around him and show every one that he can lead a big team. 20. Alex, PSV: Played a major role in PSV Champions League campaign last season. Alex has to understand defence is not all about physique. If he wants to be a world class defender he has to start reading the game. 19. Gonzalo Rodriguez, Villareal: One of the biggest talents from Argentina. He is by far one of the best defenders in La Liga today. With a little bit more games at the highest level Gonzalo will gain the necessary experience to be one of 10 best defenders in the world. Maybe he will gain that experience at World Cup 2006? He is already rated much higher by a lot of Argentinians than Walter Samuel. 18. Sol Campbell, Arsenal: Campbell is no leader, this is his main weakness. His physique has always been his major plus combined with his passion. However, he has difficult times lately and there are english defenders to be rated higher than him. 17. Samuel Kuffuor, Roma: An experienced defender. A hard working defender that tackles pretty good. His main strength besides his experience is that he doesn’t have any real weakness. But his main weakness is that he isn’t the best in anything, he is just okay in every part of the game. 16. Robert Kovac, Juventus: Sadly Kovac is getting old. At the moment Kovac is maybe better than he has ever been. Unfortunately for him though, Cannavarro and Thuram do much better and since he isn't the youngest anymore, he will get sooner or later replaced by younger defenders. 15. Christian Chivu, Roma: When will Chivu live up to the expectations everyone had of him? He makes too often the wrong decision on the field. But with his beautiful technique, passes and free kicks he has it all. He has everything a defender needs and doesn’t need, but doesn't hurt either. His good passing makes him a great threat to the opponents defence. 14. Rio Ferdinand, Manchester Unaited: Ferdinand has shown every one he can be one of the best when thing is going the way he want to go. But today he has to prove that he can play as one of the best defenders in the world and lead his defence when the club goes through hard times. He has world class defenders beside him in Man Utd today so he cant blame them for his bad performance this season. Can Ferdinand hold his place in England’s team for the World Cup? 13. Andrea Barzageli, Palermo: Works well under pressure. A calm defender that read the game beautifully. One thing still maintains for Barzageli to prove, can he succeed in one of the best clubs in the world? Can he manage to lead other world class defenders? The time is maybe in for Barzageli to show everyone that he can manage this. 12. Walter Samuel, Inter: Samuel had a bad season in Real Madrid. It was clearly that he lacked the nessecary speed in calmness. Many football fans looked at Samuel as the best defender in the world, but his move to Real Madrid, and their offensive play didn't fit Samuel at all. Suddenly we could see Samuel wasn’t as perfect as we expected him to be. Samuel needs to go back to the secure environment he had in Roma. 11. Sami Hyypia, Liverpool: Maybe the best player when it comes to heading. Reads the game pretty well, places him self right, but lacks speed and technique. If wee could forget technique and speed, Hyypia would probably be the best defender. 10. Lillian Thuram, Juventus: As long as he doesn’t need to be a leader in defence he does a good job. But when he has to step up and lead in absence of Cannavaro, he fails to live up, which can also be seen from his rather poor performances at the last European Championship with France. 9. Carles Puyol, Barcelona: When you play as well as Puyol does in such an offensive team like Barcelona it says a lot about what you are made of. Puyol has stepped up as a leader for Barca. But the only way for him to prove everyone how good he really can be, is to leave for another league where he can get more help from other defenders in the team as well as the midfield. Today too much of Barca's defensive play lays on Puyols shoulder, he needs someone who can ease up the pressure. 8. Paolo Maldini, Milan: The end is near for Maldini. He has more than enough experience to take out every striker in the world. Maldinis main weakness is his heading ability. 7. Fabio Cannavaro, Juventus: Cannavaro relays to much on dirty tricks. If he just could relay on his great abilities. He is a small player but still manage to take out every kind of attacker. His mental strength is unbelievably and you seem to believe that it's impossible to break this guy. 6. Lucio, Bayern Munchen: A huge strong defender who can help the team in attack. When he combines strength, pace and technique he is unstoppable. He has everything a defender needs to have. His weakness is his South American passion. Sometimes he is to aggressive, sometimes he tries too hard. To be the best he needs to be a little calmer. 5. Jaap Stam, Milan: When Stam is 100% no one can get past him. But sadly Stam isn’t 100% so often anymore. 4. Roberto Ayala, Valencia: The new Passarella. Leads the Valencia defence pretty well. Players who play beside Ayala seem to rise. Places himself perfect but lacks speed. 3. Jamie Carragher, Liverpool: Will he get a place in England’s starting 11 in World Cup 2006? Jamie seems to taken over leadership in Liverpool`s defence. Lacks speed and experience but has stamina that other players can only dream about. 2. John Terry, Chelsea: Terry is a leader. He almost never loses his head or does something stupid on the field. Jose likes to rotate his players, but Terry seems untouchable. That says a lot. If Terry just could be a little calmer when he wins the ball he could maybe be the best. 1. Alessandro Neste, Milan: He might lack aggression, but he has everything else. Maybe the fastest defender in the world. With his pace, strength, markering and positioning its impossible to get past him.</div>The list is alittle dated, but about accurate. I think Carvalho, Lucio, Mexes off the top of my head should be up there as well. Not to sure about Hyppia and a few others from that list though.
Anyone who considers Cannavaro the best defender is deluded, yeah he may of won a world cup but his age is starting to shit on his performance, 5 years to late for me! He is having a fair season though, but nothing magical.
