Paul Jewell fully expects to be hauled before the Football Association following his scathing attack on referee Phil Dowd in the wake of Wigan's 2-1 defeat at Arsenal.

The Latics saw their hopes of picking up three priceless points in the battle for Barclays Premiership survival shattered as the Gunners came from behind to maintain their unbeaten record at Emirates Stadium.

A stunning strike from Denny Landzaat had put the visitors ahead - but the Wigan bench were incensed during the second half when Dowd waved away what looked to be a strong penalty claim after Emile Heskey went down in the penalty area under a challenge from substitute Mathieu Flamini.

To rub salt in the wounds, the Frenchman then looked to be offside in the build-up to Arsenal's equaliser with nine minutes left, when Fitz Hall put through his own net.

Tomas Rosicky won the match with a late header - and Wigan left the Emirates Stadium empty handed.

The manner of the defeat was too much for their manager.

"I have only blamed referees three times this season, and he has been in charge every time," said Jewell.

"He is telling our players to F-off and stuff, which I do not mind because it is a man's game - but then he is telling me that I will be sent into the stands for having a go at him. It cannot all be one-way.

"If he wants to take my conduct to the authorities, then I will take his language to my players to the authorities as well.

"I am sure I will have to explain my comments to the Football Association - but if I do, I will just show them a video of the game."

Jewell - whose side are only five points above the relegation zone, albeit with a match in hand - lamented: "It is a penalty. He (Flamini) puts his hand on his shoulder. Why would Emile want to go down? Some of the officials do not understand the game.

"He (Dowd) has cost our team the points - It could cost us £50million."

The Latics boss was also unhappy his side were temporarily reduced to 10 men for Arsenal's equaliser as midfielder Josip Skoko's return after treatment was delayed by Dowd.

Jewell said: "Even their goal should not have been allowed.

"Josip Skoko was injured and went off the pitch - but then, when he got up, Dowd would not let him back on, even though the fourth official was happy to let him on. It was a catalogue of mistakes."

The Wigan manager continued: "Referees just do not realise the significance of football matches.

"I think some of them consider it to be more of a hobby and they do not take it as seriously as we do as managers and players.

"I just do not understand where they are coming from."
