Hearing and reading the comments about the standard of premiership referees, since Paul Jewell's comments on Sunday thrust the subject to the forefront of football debate, the focus appears to be in the wrong place. The referees are fine; in my view, it is the players' and managers' behaviour that needs addressing. All they do is shout, swear, backchat, dive and generally disrespect the match officials at every turn. Until a zero-tolerance policy on such behaviour is enforced in football (such as occurs in Rugby), the referees will not feel they have sufficient control over the matches they officiate, nor the necessary confidence in themselves, and from everyone else involved in football, to do their jobs properly and with authority.
I know referees have a extremely hard job but they should get most decisions right and on Sunday during the Wigan match they didnt.
