Watching Birmingham v Everton (1986) on ESPN classic. I have to say that, although the standard of football and skill level isn't as good as the top level nowadays, it's more enjoyable to watch. There's no constant argy-bargy, there's a refreshing lack of shoving and tugging when a free-kick is played into the box, no diving, no shoving, pushing, man-handling and namby-pamby hysterics when a hard tackle goes in, no crowding the ref or giving him a tirade of abuse just because a throw-in goes against them. I'd only been watching the Newcastle match 5 minutes before I felt like putting my boot through the screen when Duff blatanrtly dived for the penalty, despite John Helm and Joe Royle's attempts to sidestep the issue and avoid mentioning the dread "D" word.
Yeah i agree, ive watched a few older games and there more enjoyable to watch. No ego's or spoilt brats and alot less cheating and swearing. Its all about the football back then, now the games a joke. Money's a big problem in it sadly.
They both have their good points. New football because of the skill and atmosphere. old football because no one cheated like they do now-a-days
