British fans say George Best was the greatest but George Best is very unknown outside of Britain. Man utd only won one european cup whilst he was there and he didnt grace any international tournaments and played against world class teams with the best players. Its all very hypothetical with regards to Best. Best was a great player but only in England. If Best was better than Maradona then surely Best could have atleast led Northern Ireland to qualification for the 1970 world cup and maybe also 1974 world cup too. Also Best played in a brilliant Manchester United team.

Most people in Brazil say Garrincha or Leonidas Da Silva is the greatest ever footballer and alot of folks in Argentina say Di Stefano is the greatest. People in Hungary say Puskas is on par with Maradona.

Di Stefano, Garrincha, Leonidas Da Silva and Best may have had the skill and potential but they didnt fulfill it to the very maximum and show it like Diego Maradona did.

Diego Maradona led Argentina to the world youth title in 1979, he single-handedly led a poor Argentina team to the world cup in 1986 and he again led the team to the final in 1990. Maradona led a poor Napoli team the equivalent of todays Aston Villa to two serie A titles and the Uefa cup(when it was a proper trophy)

George Best couldent even qualify Northern Ireland for the world cup or European Championship. Best was a great player but to say he is even better than Maradona is just complete and utter rubbish. People might comment on Best exceling against the likes of rough and tough defenders such as Chopper Harris but Best struggled immensely against the vile cynical tactics of Estudiantes. Maradona had to put with vile latin cynical tactics all his career against the likes of Goicochea (butcher of bilbao) who put him out of the game for nearly a year and after that Maradona came back stronger and didnt let the vile cynical tactics of the likes of Gentile, Passarella and those dirty vile uruguyan teams put him off.

Great post about the hugely overrated and overhyped Best.

He had quite a bad rep away from football too imo, a bit like Ronaldo will be.
