What makes a manager great is the question i will like you to answer for me. Arsene Wenger says "Plenty of managers have won the Champions League who will not be considered great managers," "What is important is that you look at their careers in 10, 15 or 20 years. What kind of quality have you brought through in your work and on how consistent a level have you done it? "If you would like to compare every manager you give each one the same amount of resources and say: 'you have that for five years'. After five years you see who has done the most. If i can conclude from what he has said, i think the best manager would go to Sir Alex Ferguson.
i suppose winning trophies season in, season out for a long period of time could count as making a manager great
Yes, I would agree with you about Ferguson, and I believe Wenger has a grudging but large amount of respect for him. If Wenger sees through this next set of players, and continues like Ferguson in developing youth and making great team after great team, I think we can also add his name to Ferguson's. I think Wenger is responding to the kind of ego that titles himself 'The Special One' after a career that has spanned what? five or six years? And in that time he has put out an extremely boring Porto side and an extremely boring Chelsea side. Ferguson gets things done too, but he is able to develop exciting talent and let them thrive in their individual strengths. Mourinho wants a team of robots. Ferguson, for all the negative things that all coaches do (whingeing, blinkered subjective comments about their teams, etc.) represents all that's good about coaching. (I have to say that Mourinho is an incredibly entertaining individual, and I would miss him if he left.)
Do you honestly think his old Porto side played boring football? I kid you not, you are a plum! Go watch some of there old matches. Same goes for Chelsea last season and the season before that, it was only recently we have become slightly boring as we don't regulary play our wingers (Robben, SWP, J.Cole)... last season we did and if I may say so, we were great to watch. Whenever Robben plays we look rather exiting and when J.Cole's back, we shall dominate again.
Get a team that is falling apart or shit that is getting beat week in week out and losing to the smaller teams a great manager should be able to get the to unite and play against teams get results and also win trophies for example Walter Smith at Scotland and Rangers. Scotland were lower than rank 50th in the world when Smith took over and started getting results and were sitting top of the quilifying group for European Championships joined with France. When Paul Le Guen was manager at Rangers they would win maybe 2-0 one week then for the next 2 games get beat of the smaller sides. Since Walter Smith has went back to Rangers they have lost a league game yes Tel-Aviv beat them in Isrieal but they got slaughted when they went to Ibrox 4-0. Also Jose Mourinho now he has money so he can buy nearly any player in the world but Porto werent exactly the Best team in the world and he beat Celtic in the UEFA Cup Final with them.. with the players diving I might add but oh well thats football for you then the next year he won the Champions League. Also Alex Ferguson he did it with Aberdeen and he has been at United for 20 Years and has done very well a man who I have alot of respect for maybe my favourite manager in the game .
