Friday, January 9, 2004 ALLEN PARK -- Detroit Lions head coach Steve Mariucci got his man. Pat Morris, who served under Mariucci during their time with the San Francisco 49ers, signed a multiyear contract to coach the Lions offensive line. The Lions had received permission from the 49ers to talk to Morris earlier this week, but a potential complication arose when San Francisco defensive coordinator Jim Mora Jr. was named the Atlanta Falcons head coach on Thursday. Mora immediately tried to lure Morris to Atlanta, but was unsuccessful. The Lions, though, did lose out on another candidate. Mariucci had hoped to sign Falcons receivers coach George Stewart, who had spent six years with Mariucci in San Francisco. But because Stewart still has one year left on his deal with Atlanta, Mora informed Stewart that he would be retained and stay with the Falcons. -- Tom Kowalski
