Owen Hargreaves quoted in the NOTW today as saying that "United are the only team I want to join". This has probably been one of the most drawn out transfer sagas of all time, but is he the correct centre midfielder for United to sign?

Hargeaves cetainly seems to think so,"A football team is a puzzle with different pieces and and you need to find the right pieces and the right mix...United believe I am the final piece in their puzzle and that is an honour for me." I'm not so sure, however, that he is the missing piece, and even though Sir Alex sorely needs a combatative midfielder, Hargreaves might actually disrupt a fomula that is currently working. Scholes has been in great form all season and has at least two more seasons left at the top. Carrick, meanwhile, has been quietly effective in front of our back four (in the area Hargeaves would likely occupy). Would a United team with Hargeaves and Carrick in the engine room be too defensive? Or could Carrick step into the Scholes role as playmaker? Personally I'm not so sure he could and therefore an attacking midfielder would also be required.

And of course there is the issue of value for money, a topic that has haunted Carrick since his arrival at the club to the delight of many Spurs' fans. I believe United's relentless pursuit of Hargeaves has had two effects, it has strengthened Bayern's resolve to keep a player on a long-term contract (even though like today he is willing to put hiself in the shop window), and sent his price spiralling (I remember Beckenbauer quoting ?30million+ in January). With Bayern's recent acquistions of Jose Ernesto Sosa, Jan Schlaudraff and Hamit Altintop the sale of Hargreaves is now more possible as well.

But I think ?20 million would be a huge chunk of the budget this summer (barring slaes)and United need a striker too, I just wish that United had closed out the Senna deal last summer!

    Any thoughts?

not worth 20million by any means. We have already splashed the cash on Carrick and there is no point of buying Hargreaves for either him or Carrick to sit on the bench. Fergie needs to divert his attention to a World Class Striker.

From what I heard he was always booed because he was Canadian.
