<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">CELTIC?1 (Riordan 52, MOTHERWELL?0 ONE win is all that stands in the way of Celtic and a second successive Scottish Premierleague title. Derek Riordan?s second-half strike earned the Hoops three points against Motherwell and means that a victory in the April 22 clash with Kilmarnock at Rugby Park will hand Gordon Strachan?s side the championship. However, if Rangers lose against St Mirren at Love Street on Sunday, Celtic will be crowned champions even earlier. The sun was shining and a capacity crowd was inside Celtic Park before kick-off as the Hoops chased a win that would take them to within touching distance of the SPL title. Strachan made just one change ? Maciej Zurawski for Craig Beattie ? to his side, while Motherwell left Celtic-bound striker Scott McDonald out of their starting XI. With Mark Wilson still injured and Paul Telfer departed, Gary Caldwell again found himself playing right-back and showed his versatility in the opening minutes, firing over two fierce crosses that found no takers. Yet, it was from the opposite wing that Celtic almost took the lead. Lee Naylor?s deep cross found Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and the Dutchman?s knockdown was perfect for Zurawski, but the Pole dragged his shot wide. Zurawski, gathering Aiden McGeady?s pass, threatened again as Celtic took control of the match. However, Graeme Smith?s goal remained intact. Krisztian Vadocz, Motherwell?s Hungarian midfielder, had no luck with a speculative shot from long-range, while Naylor drove over the bar from inside the box. Paul Hartley then connected with Shunsuke Nakamura?s corner, but Smith saved. Celtic were enjoying the lion?s share of possession, yet Motherwell ? with David Clarkson ploughing a lone furrow up front ? were stifling the Hoops? attacking moves. The visitors then spurned a tremendous chance to go ahead in the 27th minute when Darren Smith nodded Steven McGarry?s cross into the danger area and Celtic scrambled clear at the second attempt. Vennegoor of Hesselink almost capitalised on impressive wing-play from Hartley as Celtic responded well, while McGeady showed speed and skill to hare away from Martyn Corrigan. Unfortunately, the Irish internationalist?s shot was too high. Zurawski?s afternoon was finished by a late and rash challenge from Stephen Craigan, which earned the Motherwell captain a yellow card. Riordan was introduced for the Pole and joined Vennegoor of Hesselink up front. With the score remaining level at the break, the former Hibernian man?s impact was maybe not immediate, but seven minutes after half-time he gave the Hoops support something to cheer about. McGeady won possession on the left flank and skilfully rode two challenges before feeding Nakamura. The Japanese playmaker looked up and picked out Vennegoor of Hesselink at the back post. The Dutchman rose above the Well defence and powered a header across the face of goal, where Riordan ? showing a poacher?s instinct ? knocked the ball over the line. Nakamura threatened with a swerving free-kick as Celtic upped the pressure. Darren O?Dea then glanced a header wide from the Japanese midfielder?s corner. Boruc saved bravely at the feet of Smith as Motherwell threatened for the first time in the second half. The visiting striker looked suspiciously offside, but the Pole didn?t wait for the whistle and parried the shot to safety. McGeady floated a delicate chip inches past the post as Celtic searched for the killer second goal. Nakamura almost delivered it with another vicious set-piece effort, which narrowly missed the top corner.
