I know how much everyone here loves the Jets, so I thought I needed to be the one to open a thread here and see if I could stir up some interest.

With that being said, where do the Jets stand going into 2004? What do they need? What do they have?

Looking back at this past season, the most obvious problem the Jets had was their defense or lack thereof. They finished 28th against the run and 5th against the pass. Being soft against the run really hurt the Jets all season. Their main bright spot in the front seven was Ellis who had 12.5 sacks. Seeing the stats and watching a few of their games, it was proven that their front 7 was too soft against the run which has to be blamed on several factors. I would say the Linebackers underachieved. Mo Lewis, Sam Cowart, and Marvin Lewis should dominate, but they didn't. Only Ellis & Ferguson really impacted the D-Line. But most importantly, the scheme (coaching) must have been flawed. The scheme was remedied by firing Cotrell, but what next? Their secondary should remain the strength of the defense next year, but adding DL depth appears to be critical. With some key additions and a good scheme, the Jets D could be back in the top 10.

The offense is not without blame, but it's hard to put it on Pennington. Had he played 16 games, the season may have ended differently. This guy seems like he's going to be special and do some great things in the NFL. Moss was also a pleasant surprise. I knew he was quick and had good hands, but I just wasn't sure how effective he would be at 5'9". That's a tough height to play WR at and have as much success as Moss did. Conway is aging and Chrebet is on his last leg. I would think getting a big name in there at receiver would be one of their priorities. I think a guy like Roy Williams opposite of Moss would be downright scary. I know they won't get Williams, but I'm sure there will be some free agents out there.

Another big question on offense is what's going to become of Martin & Jordan. Curtis really picked up the pace and finished with very respectable yardage numbers. Jordan disappointed in the wake of Martin's success. But what now? Curtis is into his 30's and could be done at any time. He looked good after Pennington came back, but how many more seasons can he do that? He still looked as though he lost a step and some of his quick burst.

    Needs
    1. DC - They need to get someone to turn that D around.
    2. DL - Get another Ellis to create balance. If they don't do that they need to teach an advanced course in TACKLING. Something they didn't do well all season.
    3. WR - They need a 6'4"-6'5" to balance Moss. Put Conway in the slot.

Good Points, John Abraham was out for 6 games last year he would've helped

I just beleive that they did not blitz enough on second down!!
i watched everyone of their games
    2nd fave team NY thing

I beleive that let Jordan stay around, 2 years and Curtis will be the next Emmitt were he will have to go somewhere because of the $$$
    the difference he will suceed
he is the kind of the person that wont let you down

Unfortunately, the Jets have a lot of needs to fill. The DL can pass rush, but can't stop the run. The LBs are old. Their WRs are short. Martin is aging (although he put up good numbers again).

I'm not happy with their defensive coordinator. They could've had Greg Williams, Dick Jauron, or Dave McGuinnis. And they got neither of them. Very strange. They hired the guy from the Ravens last week. Why didn't they wait to try and pick up McGinnis? Why not wait to grab the LB coach from the Pats after the Super Bowl?

well about thier needs they did get vilma in the draft who has the potential to be the next ray lewis. They did get more speed on defense and got rid of some of those old and slow LB's. they also got mccariens which i think is a great move to compliment moss.

we've got barton who is a terrific tackler and did well in Oakland (ha an oakland guy in a jets uniform) also victor hobson was a rookie last year and did a decent job as a back up. now at the starting role i think he will step up,
