No one likes penalties- especially if they lose because of them. So here is an alternate suggestion. Golden goal, play until someone scores, in 7 minute "intervals"... with no breaks between intervals... only there is a catch. After each interval both teams must remove 2 players until they only have one left. Theory being, the fewer players on the field, the quicker they get worn down, and also, fewer players to cover up mistakes- more likely we're going to see a goal. It would only take 35 minutes (about the same length of time it takes for "extra time" now) to get to a 1 vs 1 scenario- and we all know in a 1 vs 1 it would only take seconds before a goal is scored. I think there would be less grumbling by the loser in such a scenario, it would be fairer, take about the same length of time (max) as extra time and penalties currently take up... and quite honestly be way more enjoyable. Not to mention the vast complexity of strategies that would need to be developed... at what point does it become advantagous for the goalie to play "rush"? Thoughts? I know my suggestion is "way" out there... but I really think it would be exciting and could work. Would give people extra incentive not to get red-cards- that one less man would be disastrous as the sides get smaller.
I don't like it, this wouldn't work especially on a full sized pitch. And you say it'd only take 35 minutes, but that means it is replacing extra time AND penalty shootouts.
Its not bad. Maybe instead of 7 minutes make it 5 or even 3. Just to make the game more exciting. I would like to see this trialed one day. It would be great. If this was brought in i wuldnt have to listen to Chelsea supporters whining at school.
