Hey guys, I was thinking about the role Lampard plays for Chelsea... What position would you say Lampard plays? He's not really a support striker, but he doesn't (from what I have seen) perform a lot of traditional midfielder duties, either. What he does seem to do is roam around the pitch sniffing out opportunities and poaching goals. Well, the thing that got me thinking about this was thinking about Julio Baptista, and what position he is trying to play on the pitch? Baptista isn't really a support striker, either, but he is also not really a midfielder. Baptista is really trying to play the same role on the pitch that Lampard does for Chelsea, albeit in a different style. To roam around, sniff out opportunities, holes, or weaknesses in the opponent's game and then take advantage of them, especially in terms of scoring goals. So the point is, and it came into my mind... Is this a new position? Is this the tactical cutting edge of football today, one of the new developments in the sport? What these guys are doing, it seems to me, is not in the same vein as a traditional attacking midfielder. They are more like deep lying goal poachers. Their role on the pitch is more like that of someone like Ruud van Nistelroy (sp?) than someone like Wayne Rooney (support striker) or guys like Ronaldinho and Paul Scholes (attacking midfielder). Are these guys deep-lying goal poachers? Is that a new kind of position on the pitch?
Fat Frank doesn't have any discipline on the pitch. He leaves all the hard work to Essien and/or Ballack then goes in the hunt of glory with ANOTHER deflected goal. Is it no coincidence that Chelsea haven't been as good this season and look more susceptable because Essien isn't there to do all the "donkey work". Thats why he'll never be international class.
Makelele has been making Lampard look far far better than he actually is. When Claude goes, Lampard will be in serious trouble. Essien isn't the same player as Makelele and tends to drift forward more. That is if he isn't stuck in defence.
