Wayne Rooney has immense talent , everyone has witnessed this in glimpses of his genius but im sorry whilst he is a very good player and plays well within the squad i am starting to worry about whether hes letting his potential slip , its time for him to step up a notch , like ronaldo has done this season , i know hes scored a few more goals etc but come on hes not quite as good as we thought hed be by now, maybe im being to judgmental and maybe he'll flourish next season but i just don't see the same ability from him as i do when i watch messi ronaldinho ronaldo etc, maybe he needs to drop back into midfield to unleash his true game as he has an all round talent possibly be a stevie g type player rather than a flamboyant forward, what do you think?

Good post mate, he has the potential as you said none of us can deny that but how many really good games has he played this season....maybe 5 at the most I have a few colleagues who are season ticket holders at Old Trafford and they say the same thing he has over all had a disappointing season even though when you look at the goals it does hide the facts a little.

he has not scored for his country in a competetive game since Euro 2004.

He has scored in just 4 ECL games in his entire career.

but he a good player and as said above, has time on his side and has shown some improvement late this season.

I would agree to a certain extent, in the sense that he has not progressed in the vein of the player he once promised to be - i.e. a flamboyant match-winner, but would all readers not concur that what has been most evident this season has been his diversity and all round value to the team?? Ronaldo has taken over the role as the flair player at Old Trafford; dominating the headlines with his pulsating runs, quick feet and new found eye for goal, but do not for one second underestimate Rooneys importance to the side.

For want of a better expression, he has done much of the 'donkey' work this season, often dropping back to help out his midfield and win the ball deep inside his own half. Perhaps this is the direction Fergie has intended him to go; after all, Rooney the workhorse, who tracks back, wins the ball and then starts and finishes moves, is of more benefit to the team than the mercurial - if occassionally ineffective - character of seasons gone by.

Do not forget, that of all coaches in the modern game, no one preaches the theory of the sum being greater than the whole of its' parts more than Sir Alex.

So in conclusion to your thread theme...has Rooney left his talent unfulfilled? No, not as far as I'm concerned - if anything, he has simply chanelled his natural ability for the game in another direction and become a more rounded, if not as extravagent, player for it.

Anyone else agree with these thoughts?

The thing I found with Rooney is that while he has all this talent he struggles to be consistent, he'll perform really well one match and score an amazing goal or two then the next couple of matches he has no effect on the game.

He's still very young and still finding his feet in football. People forget that he's only 22. He's got another 11 years at the top of his game, at least.

He'll come good and then there will be no stopping him.
