My dad told me he missed the old football times, where the score of a football match would usually average 3 or 4 goals or even more. Sure that football is now more popular than ever before with the revenues, the money and the stadiums but has football really been entertaining these days? I mean, look at the World Cup 2006, it was the lowest scoring WC tournament since the Italia 90. The rise of defensive football has certainly been an issue, now more teams have played more direct football and most teams have almost they're whole players behind the ball and most teams look not to concede where the old days it went like "if you score, we can score more." Football in the old times was great because a push and a shove will be overlooked by the referee when nowadays football is not really free-flowing because the ref stops the game all the time. There is only a few teams in the world that plays free-flowing football (Arsenal, Barca, etc.). And nowadays football players falls down with the slightest of touches where old days the footballers would just shrug off the challenge. Football has certainly been more popular, but it has also been less entertaining.
I totally agree the game is much worse to watch now than it was before. The governing bodies need to punish cheating, diving even swearing from players and then they might actually start playing again. Unfortunately the money has created a don't lose cancer in the game. The smaller teams just try not to lose games they think they cant win
