    Skysports:

Smith is thought to be mulling over his options at Manchester United as he goes in search of regular first-team football next season.

With competition for places at Old Trafford likely to be fierce, Smith could find himself well down the pecking order.

Gareth Southgate has stepped up his bid to sign the former Leeds man and is offering him the chance of playing regularly in the Premier League.

Ferguson hinted recently that Smith may be allowed to leave United if a club comes in for him and that has reignited Boro's interest.

Southgate has requested permission to speak to Smith with a view of thrashing out a deal for the England international.

Hopefully he goes and gets the premier league time he deserves. With Viduka gone from Borough, a striker is needed. Smith will do very well if he goes IMO.

What do you mean a striker is needed? We've signed Tuncay Sanli and Jeremie Aliadiere both this summer. Tuncay was an icon at Fenerbahce and they're both going to inject pace into the squad and we need that.

I've always rated Alan Smith but I don't think we need him, of course I'd take him but we've got the two forwards mentioned up there as well as Yakubu and Lee Dong-Gook and they're both very good players. If we don't sign a right winger/midfielder before the deadline one of them will move into that position but I hope it doesn't come to that.

Smith would be a good signing to any club he goes to. It's just a shame what happened to him at Old Trafford, he was mostly injured and playing in midfield at his time with us. He's quite a similar player to Viduka, he could walk into the 'Boro squad without any problems.

Smith out, and hopefully Tevez in. I'v Always rated Smith but eather Smith Or Saha had to go, And i think Rooney Tevez & Saha is a better strike force.

I think he'll go to Everton. They always want Uniteds dross.

I think he will go. He needs to be playing regular.
