ARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- Just when things seemed like theycouldn't get worse for the Chicago White Sox, they did.

The White Sox committed four errors in the third inning, threeby rookie third baseman Andy Gonzalez, leading to three runsthat turned a tie game into a 5-1 loss to the Texas Rangers onThursday night.


The Rangers won their season-high fifth straight game, includingthe last three to sweep Chicago, which has lost eight of itslast nine and 16 of 19. The White Sox have also dropped theirlast nine road contests, their longest such streak since May2001.


Sammy Sosa had two hits, including his 18th home run of theseason, to lead the Rangers. Starter Kevin Millwood (9-11)threw seven strong innings, giving up just one run on six hitsand striking out six to win his first career game against theWhite Sox in his seventh start against them.


Gonzalez, a rookie last called up from Class AAA Charlotte onAugust 21, had committed just one error in 48 total games thisseason, although this was just his fifth outing at third base.

With the game tied 1-1 in the third inning, Chicago's fourthrowing errors pushed the Rangers ahead. Jarrod Saltalamacchialed off by hitting a ground ball to Gonzalez, whose throwsailed over Paul Konerko's head at first. The next batter,Ramon Vazquez, bunted down the first base line, and Chicagostarting pitcher John Danks hit him in the back with the throw,putting runners on first and second.


One out later, Gonzalez fielded Gerald Laird's bunt and againthrew it past Konerko, allowing both Saltalamacchia and Vazquezto score. After Laird stole second, Danks struck out MichaelYoung, and Sosa followed with another ground ball to Gonzalez,whose throw again whizzed over Konerko's head, bringing Lairdaround to score.


Sosa made it a 5-1 Texas advantage in the fifth inning,delivering an RBI single to center field that brought homeLaird, who had doubled.


Danks (6-13) lost his seventh straight decision, although he hasenjoyed some solid outings in those contests, including thisgame, when he gave up five runs - two earned - on seven hits andstruck out eight, matching his career-high. The rookieleft-hander has received just 10 runs of support over his lasteight starts, during which he is 0-7.


Chicago's Jim Thome continued his torrid pace lately, beltinghis 23rd home run of the season and 495th of his career in thetop of the first inning off Millwood.


Sosa responded by drilling his 18th of the season and 606th ofhis career just over the wall in center field when leading offthe second inning, tying the game at 1-1. Danks, a former Texasfirst-round draft pick, surrendered his 27th home run of theseason, tied for second-most in the American League, and becameSosa's 368th victim.

Errors, Sosa, do in White Sox again

ARLINGTON, Texas (Ticker) -- Just when things seemed like theycouldn't get worse for the Chicago White Sox, they did.

The White Sox committed four errors in the third inning, threeby rookie third baseman Andy Gonzalez, leading to three runsthat turned a tie game into a 5-1 loss to the Texas Rangers onThursday night.


The Rangers won their season-high fifth straight game, includingthe last three to sweep Chicago, which has lost eight of itslast nine and 16 of 19. The White Sox have also dropped theirlast nine road contests, their longest such streak since May2001.


Sammy Sosa had two hits, including his 18th home run of theseason, to lead the Rangers. Starter Kevin Millwood (9-11)threw seven strong innings, giving up just one run on six hitsand striking out six to win his first career game against theWhite Sox in his seventh start against them.


"It seems like I'm getting more comfortable every time out,"Millwood said. "I'm still having trouble with my curveball. Itwas a good outing. I hope I'll be able to take some goodmomentum into next season."


Gonzalez, a rookie last called up from Class AAA Charlotte onAugust 21, had committed just one error in 48 total games thisseason, although this was just his fifth outing at third base.

"I'm mad, but it's just part of the game, it's going to happensometimes," Gonzalez said. "I was just trying to make a throw.Three throws that weren't good, cost us three runs, to me, Ithink that was the game, but tomorrow's another game." "As amanager, I'm never going to get on somebody making physicalerrors on the field," said manager Ozzie Guillen. "I never did,I never will. I think that's part of the game. Unfortunately,it happened to this kid.


"He just moved there 3-4 days ago, and those mistakes in oneinning, I think everybody in the dugout was feeling for him,including myself. It's not a good feeling when you're on thefield, and you put your pitcher in a hole, and then you try toget him out of the hole and you put him in deeper. I know howthat feels."


With the game tied 1-1 in the third inning, Chicago's fourthrowing errors pushed the Rangers ahead. Jarrod Saltalamacchialed off by hitting a ground ball to Gonzalez, whose throwsailed over Paul Konerko's head at first. The next batter,Ramon Vazquez, bunted down the first base line, and Chicagostarting pitcher John Danks hit him in the back with the throw,putting runners on first and second.


One out later, Gonzalez fielded Gerald Laird's bunt and againthrew it past Konerko, allowing both Saltalamacchia and Vazquezto score. After Laird stole second, Danks struck out MichaelYoung, and Sosa followed with another ground ball to Gonzalez,whose throw again whizzed over Konerko's head, bringing Lairdaround to score.


"When a major league team gives you more than three outs in aninning you have to take advantage of it," Laird said. "Tonightthey gave us opportunities to get four or five outs in aninning. Guys put the ball in play and we put some runs across."

"There's really nothing I can do about it, except just keeptrying to make pitches," Danks said. "No one wanted to make agood throw over there more than Andy Gonzalez. He wasn't tryingto throw the ball away. I didn't help my cause. It's justpart of it. There's not a whole lot you can do about it, youjust got to keep battling."


The White Sox players all met Gonzalez on his way back into thedugout, offering some words of encouragement.


"When I came to the dugout, the guys gave me a lift, saying itwas just part of the game, just keep going, keep playing the wayyou're playing," Gonzalez said. "I just take it like a man.It's just part of the game, it's just bad it happened to me, inone inning."


"I've played this game for a long time, and you see crazy thingshappen," Chicago's Darin Erstad said. "Andy's a great player,it's just one of those things. He'll be fine. If it canhappen, it's happened to us this year. We'll just keepfighting."


Sosa made it a 5-1 Texas advantage in the fifth inning,delivering an RBI single to center field that brought homeLaird, who had doubled.


"I'm taking advantage of opportunities that I have," said Sosa,who has started just 11 of the team's last 29 games after theydecided to give the bulk of playing time to younger players."I'm working on my swing, working hard and staying in shape."

"He is ready and prepared every time we have called on him,"Texas manager Ron Washington said of Sosa. "He knows how todrive in runs."


Danks (6-13) lost his seventh straight decision, although he hasenjoyed some solid outings in those contests, including thisgame, when he gave up five runs - two earned - on seven hits andstruck out eight, matching his career-high. The rookielefthander has received just 10 runs of support over his lasteight starts, during which he is 0-7.


"I felt great out there today," Danks said. "I felt like I wasable to keep the ball down for the most part, and it was a lotof fun. Obviously, I would have liked to have gotten the win,but for the most part I had a good time today."


Chicago's Jim Thome continued his torrid pace lately, beltinghis 23rd home run of the season and 495th of his career in thetop of the first inning off Millwood.


"Jim, when he's hot, he can carry a ballclub," said Guillen."That's why we have him. He does what he always does. It's justimpressive what he's done against the Rangers this year. Somepeople have those kinds of streaks against some teams and Jimmydid it."


"The guy is awesome," said Millwood, who surrendered anotherhomer to Thome in the only other previous at-bat they've facedeach other. "I finally got him out with one of the worstpitches I've ever thrown. If he weren't such a nice guy, itwould bother me that he owns me. At least I didn't give up ahome run with guys on base."


Sosa responded by drilling his 18th of the season and 606th ofhis career just over the wall in center field when leading offthe second inning, tying the game at 1-1. Danks, a former Texasfirst-round draft pick, surrendered his 27th home run of theseason, tied for second-most in the American League, and becameSosa's 368th victim.
