The subject today is maligned Dolphins, guys who unfairly seem to attract too much criticism and who could use a little more love, and I'm nominating wide receiver Chris Chambers.

Your snorting incredulity has been duly noted.

Miami earlier this summer sent out a few feelers to explore possibly trading Chambers, which gave rise to the NFL Network reporting Tuesday night that he was on the trading block.

Turns out Chambers will not be traded, but the mere hint spawned another infernal online poll in which 37 percent of Dolfans shouted, ''Trade him!,'' which validated my long-held belief that roughly 2 in 5 sports fans are mentally deranged.

    ....

Miami lost 129 catches and 1,327 yards of pass offense when Wes Welker and Randy McMichael bolted during the offseason. Without Chambers, too, your main wideouts would be journeyman Marty Booker, inconsistent Derek Hagan, and rookie project Ted Ginn Jr., whose pro résumé consists of four fake-game catches.

All of which means Chambers, just-turned-29 and in his physical prime, is more valuable than ever at a time when appreciation of him seems to be ebbing.

    Why?

Chambers in six Dolphin seasons has been nothing close to a bust or even a real disappointment. He has been what you might expect a low, second-round draft pick to be. Not a superstar. Not bad. Pretty good. Solid.

Dolphin fans... what is the deal with people wanting to trade Chambers? I don't get it either. Especially after several seasons of observing Marty Booker's mediocrity up close and personal.
