Unlike Dan Snyder's previous "shopping sprees," this year looks like the 'Skins may actually be better...

    So far they've...

    1. Hired Joe Gibbs to coach the team
    2. Secured Mark Brunell to be their starting QB
    3. Secured Clinton Portis to a long term deal to be their star Running Back

Now, they've just signed Defensive Tackle Cornelius Griffin to shore up their D-Line and they're talking to Shawn Springs (who will take over for Champ Bailey in their secondary).

What's next for the 'Skins? I'm glad the Pack isn't in that division. Jeez...

Yeah. Look @ all the "big moves" that the Redskins made last off season. Where did it get them? With a worse record than the 2002 season if memory serves.

Its pretty much evident that New Englans's method of personnel acquistion is more successful than D. Snyder's. I can hardly wait for this season to have this theory validated.

Philly signing Kearse will be much more signifcant than anything Washington has done or will yet do.

I think Steve Spurrier had more to do with the 'Skins underachieving than their talent level. Gibbs will probably actually DO something with the guys they're landing now.

Having had a first hand view at the Redskins ever since Danny boy took over them, I tell you...This is no different then any other offseason. Sure, Joe G will help BUT they need more help then that. I still dont know why he fired Schottenheimer, they started 0-5 that year and finished 8-8, they were a team on the rise, big mistake. Danny Boy has no patience, and in the NFL Patience wins. Sure they will be a better team next year, but while Danny Boy is the General Manager, they will never be a Super Bowl team. The funny thing is, with all this spending, they are dooming their future...If they dont win anything in the next 3 years, they will suck for the 3 years after that. Slow and steady wins the Race.

I dont believe in spending big in free agency, but I think the Redskins have done an excellent job this season. By acquiring Portis they get one of the leagues up and coming stars, perhaps the leagues premier player over the next few years, of course they had to part with the leagues premier cover player, but they replaced him with a talanted but overrater corner in Springs....assuming they can manage thier cap over the next few years, I think they are much closer to title now than they were 3 weeks ago...

portis is overrated. i believe that any running back would do amazing in shannahans offense. i mean TD was a noone untill he got to that O. wasnt he a 7th round draft pick. i think portis is a good rb, but id bet that he wont ever get over 1200 yards as a skin, and even 1200 isnt that good anymore

I don't disagree that Spurrier had some to do w/ the underachieving but the fish stinks from his leather chair on Redskins 1 on down.

I agree w/ Dawk that anyback in Denver's system could gain 1100 w/o breaking a sweat. IMO, It is Washington that should have gotten extra compensation as Bailey is more established. Hasn't New England proven that you can win a shutdown CB & mediocre RB?

i will go on record now as saying that portis will lead NFC in rushing if he does not miss more than 2 games. He is a better back than any other in the NFC

Please Portis overrated. Dawk you just don't want to think about what he is going to do your defense if they don't fix their run defense. Portis is THE most explosive running back in the game right now regardless of where he played. He will have a great year in washington next year. his only question in durability not ability.

Portis is a good back, a great back, but he's not a whole team. In the end, though, Washington got the better end of that deal. I'd take an explosive running back over a shut down corner any day of the week.

The 'Skins are up to their usual spend like mad traditions. They won't be able to put together a solid team as long as Daniel Snyder is calling the shots. He's too impatient and willing to dismantle his team for what is hot at the moment. Its a miracle he's been successful in business.

I'll say it again, I only question Washington's ability to protect Portis & Brunell. I think if the offensive line play improves in Washington, they will win 10 games or more. They've acquired some great talent.

I will say this about Portis though... I'm not sold as of yet of where this guy is going (up or down). I think he's amazing to watch and has skills, but this will be the first time one of those "Denver" backs got out from behind the "Denver" O-line. It should be interesting.

I think if I were drafting in a non-keeper fantasy football league, I would avoid Portis just to be on the safe side. There are a lot of other more productive backs that are a safer pick. How that translates into wins for Washington... I have no idea! [IMG]

I'm not so sure the bad line play was because the line was actually bad. Now I know that just sounded bad but just stay with me. It really came down to coaching and philosophy. Spurrier just didn't care to keep anyone in to protect ever it seemed. He just sent his five guys up there and said do what you can do. Also he didn't run the ball well enough to keep anyone from pinning there ears back and going right after the QB. I think with gibbs there the line play will improve 100% just by play calling.

I think the O-line is a solid group too now that Gibbs has hired Joe "O-line guru" Bugel to coach the unit....I know the tackles are very talented and Randy Thomas can play for sure at guard so I believe they Redskins will have a stellar offense this season....Gibbs knows what hes doing, and the Redskins are closing the gap with the eagles every day, and the Eagles know it....I think they showed that they knew t when they ponied up the farm for Kearse....

The SKINS have had a talented star studded team before, with a losing record. It's not who you have on the team but if you can get them ALL to play as one. It should be interesting to see develope and I think the SKINS will do good this season and put last season to rest.

I am starting to think that GIBBS is taking some money from his racing team and spending it on his football team, how else could they still continue signing people and for long term deals on top of that?

Still don't know if it's going to mean anything if they don't upgrade that offensive line. I'm not so sure I buy into the "philosophy" theory. Ramsey was on his back more than a prostitute on Saturday Night...
