Jacobs, Marlins blast Durbin in rout of Phillies

FLORIDA 12, PHILADELPHIA 6
By Paul Gereffi
    PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Mike Jacobs had three hits and drove in a pairof runs and the Florida Marlins used a seven-run first inning todefeat the Philadelphia Phillies, 12-6, on Saturday night.

Jimmy Rollins had four hits and three RBI but Philadelphia(72-63) saw its season-best six-game winning streak snapped andfell three games behind the New York Mets (75-60) in theNational League East.

Jacobs and the Marlins took advantage of Phillies rookie starterJ.D.Durbin (6-4), who had a disastrous outing. The righthanderfailed to retire a batter as the Marlins sent 12 men to theplate in a seven-run frame.

Jacobs, Jeremy Hermida and Matt Treanor all provided run-scoringsingles as Florida won for just the third time in the last 17games.

With the score 3-0, Todd Linden walked with the bases loaded todrive in a run and Alfredo Amezaga hit a sacrifice fly thatscored Linden.

That chased Durbin, who suffered the worst outing of his youngcareer. He allowed seven runs and five hits.

The righthander failed to retire a batter as the Marlins sent 11men to the plate in a seven-run frame. This was the first timein Marlins club history that the first seven men reached baseand all seven later scored.

"We've been struggling for a while now but to be able to comeout and play a pretty good ball game is huge for us," Jacobssaid.

"As a starter you've got to prevent that big inning and thatdefinitely was a big inning," Durbin said. "I didn't earn mymoney tonight. I'm pretty disappointed in myself and apologizeto my teammates."

Jacobs then scored from third on a wild pitch by reliever ClayCondrey and Hanley Ramirez's second single of the inning scoredTreanor to make the score 7-1.

The huge first inning was enough for Florida starter Byung-HyunKim (8-6), who allowed four runs and 10 hits with fourstrikeouts in five innings to post his second straight win. Kimpicked up a win in relief in Tuesday's 4-3 win over Atlanta, but made his first start since rejoining the Marlins lastSaturday.

It looked like Kim would give the lead back early asPhiladelphia scored three times in the second. Aaron Rowand ledoff the inning with his 23rd home run of the season to make thescore 7-2. Chris Coste and Rollins each hit run-scoringsingles that closed the gap to 7-4.

"I got seven runs but then I gave up four," Kim said. "I want tothank Fredi for trusting me a little bit. I didn't think mystuff was 100 percent. I got lucky this time but by the nextstart I'm going to be better."

The Marlins added two runs in the fifth as Jacobs doubled homeMiguel Cabrera and Kim drove in Linden on a fielder's choice tostretch the lead to 9-4.

The Phillies tried to rally in the eighth against the Floridabullpen. Armando Benitez started the frame and walked the firstbatter, before leaving with a back injury. Matt Lindstromrelieved him and walked the first batter he faced.

After a fielder's choice, Shane Victorino drove in a run with agroundout and Rollins plated a run with an infield single tomake the score 9-6.

However, closer Kevin Gregg relieved Lindstrom and got of thejam by getting Chase Utley to pop out and recorded his 27th savein 29 chances.

"We were still in the game and had a chance to make a run but wecouldn't come through with the big hit when we needed it,"Phillies manager Charlie Manual said.

Hermida then hit an RBI single and Cody Ross blasted a two-runhomer in the eighth to cap the scoring.

Rollins put Philadelphia up 1-0 as he led off the game with his25th home run of the year. He hit a 3-2 pitch from Kim over theright field fence for his eighth leadoff home run this season, and the 25th of his career - both franchise records.
