Despite a 72-66 loss to Puerto Rico last night in their final quarter-final game, Canada winds up in fifth place in the FIBA Americas Championship. That earned it a berth in next July's last-chance qualifier where three teams will earn a spot in the Beijing Olympics a month later.

And while coach Leo Rautins expects there will be some changes to that roster for the Olympic qualifier, it's looking unlikely that they would include Toronto's Jamaal Magloire.

"I would have to say it's up to the guys," Rautins said.

Rautins wasn't happy when Magloire failed to re-connect after a planned meeting had to be cancelled earlier this summer. He was less happy when he learned Magloire's intentions from an article in the Sun that quoted Magloire saying he wasn't coming. Rautins players took it worse than that.

http://ads5.canoe.ca/event.ng/Type=count&ClientType=2&AdID=73627&FlightID=42899&TargetID=6227&Segments=2371,5882,6005,6019,6026,6038,6137,7542,10492,10619,10855,12622&Targets=439,6268,7176,4362,4776,8726,6227,2942,2580,6380&Values=25,31,43,51,60,72,85,91,100,110,150,152,213,255,283,332,334,342,343,3

"The line that just killed everyone here was the one where he said if they get there (to Beijing) he would show up," Rautins said. "Man for man, everyone said at that time, 'We don't want you.'

"So, I don't know where it's at now. I haven't talked to Jamaal, but I'm tired of chasing him. Would I like to have a guy of his size on the roster? Sure. But these guys worked their butts off to get there and if they don't want him, he's not playing. I don't care if he begs to play."
http://www.torontosun.com/Sports/Basketbal...460104-sun.html

I really don't see what Canada basketball has done to make our NBA players want to play. Our program needs improvements but it just never seems to happen since we always only have 2 -3 Canadians in the NBA at a time.

As for Magloire, I don't see why there not making a big deal out of Nash. He's the MVP while Magloire a back-up center.

Canada is letting their emotions get in the way by burning off the Magloire bridge.

Magloire could help that team, at the very least he could have added depth.

Needless to say, I support Jamaal's decision not to play this summer, and I really don't care about the Canadian national team especially if they give Steve Nash a free pass.

What? You guys have no clue what the situation really is. Nash is a 12-year national team vet, Mags hasn't played since he was a junior.

    How does this sound;

You guys go buy a case of beer and I'll come by later and drink it with you (and no, I don't plan on paying). Would you go for that? If so, let me know and I'll be over soon.

That's basically what Jamal has told a team of young players (average age 24.5). He wasn't interested in doing the dirty work in this tourney but wanted them to save him a place on the Olympic team. Now maybe if he busted his ass every year for the national program this would be something they could consider. But the guy is a joke whenever mentioned with team Canada and as far as I'm concerned the team doesn't need him. His game wouldn't translate into the international style and as vulnerable as this team is mentally, he wouldn't be worth the ego and locker room risk.

And for the record, I don't give Nash a free pass. I think he should have played but if he comes back next year and does the impossible and gets Canada into the Olympics, all will be forgiven.

What has Nash accomplished? Nothing. Least Magloire is being honest about his opinions and saying he will help out when they get to a certian point rather than having to face what Dalembert is going through right now.

Our nation is a joke when it comes to basketball. People are more excited to watch 18 year old Russian and Canadians play hockey then our national basketball team even qualify for the Olympics.

Nash got us to the Olympics.

I agree with the second point though, we where going to host this year's U-19 tounrey but apparently we don't have the cash. So now some place in Russia has it.

How can some of you compare Nash to Maglorie when it comes to the Canadian Basketball team? Nash was dedicated to team Canada year after year but then decided to retire from international basketball as he was getting older, he paid his dues to the team and various communities/cities around Canada (ex. Charity Game in Toronto and Vancouver, his new facility in BC). Maglorie on the other hand kept blowing off Canada in these international tournamnets and in fact got mad at Nash for hosting a Charity game in his home town, I dont know but I really wouldnt want Maglorie on our international roster I truly believe Juan Mendez, Jesse Young and Kendal deserve to represt their country on the court next year rather then ride the bench.

Exactly and what is the average age of those guys? 23, 24? We don't need a slow and aging Mags pulling the team down.
