Now there are all the damned bandwagon fans, which I hate, because they only like a team when they do good.

Having new fans is not a bad thing its the one's who claim they were fans for the full ride.
Thing is. Last year I went to Carolina to watch the Eagles play the Panthers. No offense but the fans in Carolina are pathetic. They were selling Eagles merchandise on the street for crying out load. Then in the stadium the fans are always sooo quiet, I almost felt bad for their team. At that point they were competing for the top spot in the NFC, and the fans where like "Who cares", it doesnt matter is we win or lose, as long they are somewhat competitive. For me it was the first time ever going to see a game outside of Philly, so that attitude of total malaise was shocking. Thats why here you see so many Eagles fans, and so few Panther fans.
It's not as if the Carolina franchise is very old. Teams like Philadelphia have a huge national following. Especially after having so much recent success. I do question how big Carolina's following will become if they remain a top contender for the next several seasons.

I think getting to the Super Bowl was a big step. I look at the handful of teams that have a strong national following and it's primarily because of the great success those franchises have had. Pittsburgh, San Francisco, Dallas, Oakland, Green Bay and Chicago have all had a lot of success and carry a huge national following. Teams like Seattle, San Diego, Arizona, and even the Colts need to win some championships to get there. Carolina & Jacksonville are in same boat. I think Baltimore has gained some momentum winning the Super Bowl in 2000 and being very competitive recently.
