-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following rebuilding program flows out of one idea: The Raptors will select a PF with their top 6 selection in the draft. More specifically, I feel that they?ll be inclined to select one of Darko Milicic, Maceij Lampe, Tiago Splitter, Chris Bosh, Andersen Varejo, Sofklis Schortsiantis, or Zarko Cabarkapa depending upon their draft placement (#1-#6), who declares and which players become hot commodities as the draft approaches. The team has stated that they are looking to add a perimeter defender and a low post presence to the team for next year. I propose that both of these needs can be met through this year?s draft, with the addition of a PF with the team?s own selection, and a perimeter defender through a late lottery selection (acquired by trade with Golden State, Seattle, Memphis, Orlando, Milwaukee, or Boston). What follows is my idea on how to add a late lottery selection via a trade with Memphis. As a result of this trade, the roster will have particular strengths, weaknesses, and imbalances that are addressed by the subsequent moves. For those of you who don?t want to read through the whole analysis, the final roster looks like this (which I feel in 2-3 years will be a much better team than our current squad transposed over the same time period): PG ? Alvin Williams/Leandro Barbosa (#13 ? via Memphis)/Rafer Alston SG ? Vince Carter/Alvin Williams/Chris Jefferies SF ? Hedo Turkoglu (via Sacramento)/Jerome Williams/Glen Rice (via Houston)/Chris Jefferies PF ? Jerome Williams/Darko Milicic or Maciej Lampe or Zarko Cabarkapa (#1-#6)/Ryan Humphrey (via Memphis) C ? Lorenzen Wright (via Memphis)/Kelvin Cato (via Houston) OUT: C ? Eric Montross (to Memphis) PF/C ? Antonio Davis (to Houston) PF ? Michael Bradley (to Sacramento) SF ? Lamond Murray (to Houston) SG/SF ? Morris Peterson (to Memphis) PG ? Lindsey Hunter (to Memphis) The full assessment follows: ============================================= TRADE #1: Toronto trades: PG Lindsey Hunter(9.7 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 2.5 apg in 23.2 minutes) C Eric Montross (ppg, rpg, apg in minutes) SF Morris Peterson(14.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.3 apg in 36.0 minutes) Toronto receives: C Lorenzen Wright (11.4 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 1.1 apg in 28.3 minutes) SF Ryan Humphrey (1.9 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 0.2 apg in 9.3 minutes) 2003 First Round Draft Pick (from Memphis via Houston) - #13 Change in team outlook: -10.5 ppg, +3.2 rpg, and -3.5 apg. Memphis trades: C Lorenzen Wright(11.4 ppg, 7.5 rpg, 1.1 apg in 28.3 minutes) SF Ryan Humphrey (1.9 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 0.2 apg in 9.3 minutes) 2003 First Round Draft Pick (to Toronto via Houston) - #13 Memphis receives: PG Lindsey Hunter (9.7 ppg, 2.0 rpg, 2.5 apg in 29 games) C Eric Montross (ppg, rpg, apg in games) SF Morris Peterson (14.1 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.3 apg in 82 games) Change in team outlook: +10.5 ppg, -3.2 rpg, and +3.5 apg. TRADE ACCEPTED WHY IT COULD WORK FOR TOR? They need to get bigger up front and to do so they take on Lorenzen Wright and his contract in exchange for a veteran backcourt presence with an expiring contract, a serviceable center and a young combo swingman with a nice shooting range and slashing skills. Ryan Humphrey is filler to make the salaries match and the team will be glad to get whatever they can out of him, but won?t expect much. Lorenzen Wright is a big body to fill the lane that could benefit from being in the center-less Eastern Conference. He can provide offence, but doesn?t need to have plays run for him, and he can also rebound. He?ll need to look to block some more shots on the Raptors and might find an easier time of it in the Eastern Conference. The Raptors also pick up Memphis? first round pick which is not their own, but one owed to them by the Houston Rockets. With this pick, they could look to add a perimeter defender, preferably someone who can play both backcourt positions, or someone who could eventually replace Alvin Williams as the starting PG, affording him the opportunity to sub in off the bench. LINEUP PG ? Alvin Williams/Leandro Barbosa (#13) SG ? Vince Carter/Alvin Williams/Chris Jefferies SF ? Lamond Murray/Jerome Williams/Chris Jefferies PF ? Antonio Davis/Darko Milicic (#2)/Jerome Williams/Michael Bradley/Ryan Humphrey C ? Lorenzen Wright/Antonio Davis NOTE: My assumption is that Toronto will select a PF with their pick (Milicic, Bosh, Cabarkapa, Splitter or Lampe depending upon who declares and the placement of our pick (#1-#6) ? my choice is Milicic with the #2 selection in the draft) WHY IT COULD WORK FOR MEM? This scenario really hinges on the notion that Jerry West is looking to re-tool the team through free agency at the end of next season. The contracts of Brevin Knight ($5,000,000), Wesley Person ($7,700,000), and Bryant Reeves ($14,444,442) will be coming off the books on July 1st, 2004. West also has Qualifying Offers on Stromile Swift ($5,993,044) and Mike Miller ($4,482,486) for the same date, in addition to Team Options on Pau Gasol ($4,318,481) and Shane Battier ($3,212,402). He currently has $25,358,160 committed to Lorenzen Wright ($7,150,000), Jason Williams ($6,875,000), Michael Dickerson ($6,875,000), Cezary Trybanski ($1,760,000), Earl Watson ($1,475,000), and Ryan Humphrey ($1,223,160) for the 2004/05 Season. The addition of Lindsey Hunter ($3,300,000) does not increase this amount because his contract expires on July 1st, 2004. Morris Peterson is in the same situation as Stromile Swift and Mike Miller, with a $2,371,999 Qualifying Offer, while Eric Montross will only be paid $3,200,000 for the 2004/05 Season before his contract expires on July1st, 2005. The loss of Wright, Humphrey, and their pick, plus the addition of Hunter, Peterson, and Montross, results in a team salary of $20,185,000 on July 1st, 2004 (assuming the team options for Gasol and Battier are exercised in addition to the qualifying offers for Peterson, Miller, and Swift). This will leave West with about $22-25 million in cap space (assuming a cap of $42-$45 million) to work with in attracting free agents. He?ll also have some young talent (Swift, Gasol, Miller, Battier, and Peterson) that he can re-sign without regards to the cap (because the team will hold their Bird Rights) or to use as trade bait to try to unload the contracts of Michael Dickerson or Jason Williams. LINEUP PG ? Jason Williams/Brevin Knight/Earl Watson/Lindsey Hunter SG ? Morris Peterson/Wesley Person/Michael Dickerson SF ? Mike Miller/Shane Battier/Mike Batiste/Chris Owens PF ? Pau Gasol/Robert Archibald C ? Stromile Swift/Eric Montross/Cezary Trybanski TRADE #2: Toronto trades: PF Michael Bradley (5.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 1.0 apg in 19.6 minutes) 2003 Second Round Pick - #32 Toronto receives: SF Hidayet Turkoglu (6.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 1.3 apg in 17.5 minutes) Change in team outlook: +1.7 ppg, -3.3 rpg, and +0.3 apg. Sacramento trades: SF Hidayet Turkoglu (6.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 1.3 apg in 17.5 minutes) Sacramento receives: PF Michael Bradley (5.0 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 1.0 apg in 67 games) 2003 Second Round Pick - #32 Change in team outlook: -1.7 ppg, +3.3 rpg, and -0.3 apg. TRADE ACCEPTED WHY IT COULD WORK FOR TOR? With the addition of a young PF prospect via their own first round selection, the Raptors will have 6 players who can handle the 4 spot (Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams, Michael Bradley, Lorenzen Wright, Ryan Humphrey and their first round pick). Although Davis and Wright will probably share minutes at C as well, there will still be an excess of bodies filling out the frontcourt. This would make someone like Michael Bradley expendable. With the addition of their high second round pick, the Raptors acquire a young, talented, and versatile SF whose stock has dropped slightly due to the log jam at his position on the Kings. Turkoglu has the height (6?10?) and shooting touch to be an effective third option on offence. He?ll have to make some improvements on the defensive end of the floor, but hopefully the new coach will have more of a defensive mindset. The second round pick is assumed to be our own, not the Lakers? pick, because Los Angeles has yet to state when they would like to swap picks. LINEUP PG ? Alvin Williams/Leandro Barbosa (#13) SG ? Vince Carter/Alvin Williams/Chris Jefferies SF ? Hidayet Turkoglu/Lamond Murray/Jerome Williams/Chris Jefferies PF ? Antonio Davis/Darko Milicic (#2)/Jerome Williams/Ryan Humphrey C ? Lorenzen Wright/Antonio Davis WHY IT COULD WORK FOR SAC? Turkoglu is not getting the minutes he needs to develop into the player he can become behind Stojakovic, Christie, Jackson and Wallace. Plus, his contract will be coming due in the near future, and the Kings simply won?t have the ability to re-sign him without going deeper into luxury tax territory. Michael Bradley gives them a dimension that they need to take the team further into the playoffs ? a big body to clean the offensive glass, hustle, and eat up the garbage buckets down low. His value is even greater depending on the status of Keon Clark, who has an option on his contract to become a free agent on July 1st, 2004. The second round pick is basically a first round selection without the guaranteed contract and Sacramento can use it to select an international player at the 5 spot that they can keep overseas for a year or two until Vlade Divac retires. LINEUP PG ? Mike Bibby/Bobby Jackson/Mateen Cleaves/Damon Jones SG ? Doug Christie/Jim Jackson/Brent Price SF ? Predrag Stojakovic/Gerald Wallace PF ? Chris Webber/Michael Bradley/Lawrence Funderburke C ? Vlade Divac/Keon Clark/Scot Pollard TRADE #3: Toronto trades: PF Antonio Davis (13.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.5 apg in 35.7 minutes) SF Lamond Murray ( ppg, rpg, apg in minutes) Toronto receives: SF Glen Rice(9.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.1 apg in 24.7 minutes) C Kelvin Cato (4.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 0.3 apg in 17.1 minutes) Change in team outlook: -0.4 ppg, +0.1 rpg, and -1.1 apg. Houston trades: SF Glen Rice (9.0 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.1 apg in 24.7 minutes) C Kelvin Cato (4.5 ppg, 5.9 rpg, 0.3 apg in 17.1 minutes) Houston receives: PF Antonio Davis (13.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 2.5 apg in 53 games) PF Lamond Murray ( ppg, rpg, apg in games) Change in team outlook: +0.4 ppg, -0.1 rpg, and +1.1 apg. TRADE ACCEPTED WHY IT COULD WORK FOR TOR? The addition of Hedo Turkoglu results in a log jam at SF in addition to the need for a big body in the post to fill up the middle along with Lorenzen Wright. The other two trades make the team a little bit younger, making veteran players such as Antonio Davis and Lamond Murray expendable, since the value of their leadership and experience can be replicated by players such as Vince Carter, Alvin Williams, Lorenzen Wright, and Jerome Williams. A team that could use the intangibles that Murray and Davis bring is Houston. In return, the Raptors eat the contract of Kelvin Cato (who is too expensive for the Rockets to play backup to Ming), but gain the expiring contract of Glen Rice to do so. Rice could hopefully help some of the Raptors become better shooters during his tenure, while Kelvin Cato can bang in the paint and provide the shot blocking that Lorenzen Wright doesn?t, as well as the ability to slide over to PF if needed (which Wright can do too). Rice?s contract ($9,600,000) will come off the books along with Hakeem?s ($6,326,923) to give the Raptors $16 million in cap relief at the end of the 2004/05 Season, leaving them with a team salary of about $45 million including the contracts of Barbosa and Milicic, but excluding the extension given to Turkoglu (Qualifying Offer on July 1st, 2004 of $2,803,834). The gap between their total salary and the luxury tax threshold will provide enough room to re-sign Turkoglu to a $5-$7 million per year extension (depending on his performance) without entering into luxury tax territory. The contracts of Wright ($7,700,000 in 2005/06) and Cato ($8,640,000 in 2005/06) both expire on July 1st, 2006 and cost the Raptors more than Antonio Davis? ($13,000,000) contract expiring at the same time, but gives them more room to take advantage of their Team Options on Leandro Barbosa and Darko Milicic; plus Wright and Cato are younger than Davis, are natural C?s, and provide the Raptors with the benefit of immediate cap relief through the addition of Glen Rice and Olajuwon?s expiring deal. LINEUP PG ? Alvin Williams/Leandro Barbosa/Rafer Alston SG ? Vince Carter/Alvin Williams/Chris Jefferies SF ? Hedo Turkoglu/Jerome Williams/Glen Rice/Chris Jefferies PF ? Jerome Williams/Darko Milicic/Ryan Humphrey C ? Lorenzen Wright/Kelvin Cato WHY IT COULD WORK FOR HOU? The Rockets make this trade for one main reason: veteran leadership in the frontcourt and a banger to rebound and play defence alongside Yao Ming. Antonio Davis will provide both of those valuable assets to a Rockets team that needs their young frontcourt to develop into their All-Star potential within the next 2-3 years to compete in a tough Western Conference. Lamond Murray will also provide a veteran presence to the team and hopefully assist in the development of James Posey and Bostjan Nachbar (the latter more so than the first). He also has quite a few years ahead of him and can be a solid third option behind Francis and Mobley. In the process they take on some additional money in the short term, but set themselves up nicely for the end of the 2005/06 Season when the contracts of Davis and Murray expire, giving them about $18,000,000 in additional cap relief, leaving the team with a core of Yao Ming, Steve Francis, James Posey (if re-signed earlier) and Eddie Griffin under contract to build around. They could use these expiring contracts by trading them to a team in need of cap space in return for some young talent (i.e. 30 years or younger) and/or draft picks or they could use the cap relief themselves to lure some free agents to play for them. Either way, they?ll have more options for the future because with their current salary structure, they won?t be able to take advantage of Glen Rice?s expiring contract because it won?t put them far enough under the salary cap to be able sign a player not currently on their roster. LINEUP PG ? Steve Francis/Moochie Norris/Tito Maddox SG ? Cuttino Mobley/James Posey/Jacquin Hawkins SF ? Lamond Murray/James Posey/Bostjan Nachbar/Terrence Morris PF ? Eddie Griffin/Antonio Davis/Maurice Taylor C ? Yao Ming/Antonio Davis/Jason Collier ============================================= Comments? Suggestions? J. i just copied it from another messege board i like the lorenzin wright trade and getting turkaglu but not draft barbsa or the rockets trade because cato is a bust what do you guys think of this?
If that every happens, I will hate the raptors. We would never be able to work out all those trades, and how the hell do we get all those draft pics, and why is it only with Houston and Memphis? The only thing they need is a big man, and coach like Van Gundy to kick Vinces ass into shape, and to trade Mo Pete, and possibly AD.
how about if we slide in the draft to 6 or maybe 5 trade davis our pick for lo wright and stromile swift
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting "raptors21":</div><div class="quote_post">how about if we slide in the draft to 6 or maybe 5 trade davis our pick for lo wright and stromile swift</div> thats ok, but why is it always memphis? they're rebuilding too, im sure they want to keep the players they have and build around them, their lineup is good.
cause when i went to the raptors game lo wright was nt playing and i met him and stromile swift played awesome i just like the players on memphis

I think we will do really well with Jeff Van Gundy all we need is a tough coach, but im so disapointed with this season, i cant guess how they will do.
