<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Nets coach Byron Scott called Boston Celtic fans "crazy" during a radio interview on Wednesday.

In an interview with WFAN's Mike Francesa, Scott agreed that Boston fans have been slow to embrace the black athlete. Scott also said Celtic fans come to games "juiced up" from "drinking." WFAN is a New York-based radio station.

When Francesa asked Scott if "Boston is still a backwoods town when dealing with black athletes?" Scott responded, "I think there's a part of that up there. They're not very good fans. You could be a great fan and have a great tradition without being crazy and hostile. I think Sacramento has the best fans in basketball. They don't get outrageous like the fans in Boston."

The issue of Celtics fan behavior came up during last year's NBA playoffs when Jason Kidd's wife, Joumana, was verbally abused at FleetCenter. Scott's Nets are leading the Celtics 2-0 in their second-round, best-of-7 playoff series. Game 3 is Friday night -- in Boston.

Scott said his wife asked to go to Boston this weekend and he told her to stay home.

"We were talking about it the other day and I said, 'You can't come up there, not to Boston,' " Scott told WFAN. "Players and wives understand. It's a tough town to play in, a tough arena. The people are crazy, to say the least.

"The fans, they're very cruel and they're crazy. They come into the game, a 7 o'clock, 7:30 game, they come into the game pretty juiced up. These guys are drinking. They've had their share of beers already before the game has started, and they can get pretty hostile."

Joumana Kidd just recently responded to derogatory comments made by Boston Globe writer Bob Ryan, who was suspended by the newspaper. In a television interview, Ryan said he wanted to "smack" Kidd because of the way he feels she exploits her kids.

"I don't even know this guy," she told the New York Daily News. "It is one of those things you have to hear [for yourself] to believe. The guy is an intelligent guy. I honestly feel very sorry that I offend him. He has a lot of passion behind the hatred he has toward me. It is really hard for me to think what I could have done." </div>

Funny thing is he has a good point in what he says...

The only thing he said that was even close to being a good point was that Boston fans tend to have a few drinks in them already before the game and get outrageous in intense games. everything else was pretty off base and in poor taste and just goes to show what a classless person Byron Scott is.
he said ''The fans were getting very abusive,'' referring to last years "wife beater" chants. let me tell you something folks. i was at the friggin games. NO one was being physically or verbally abusive to Mrs. Kidd or TJ and they were lying bold face when they said otherwise trying to get attention. The chants were just chants directed at JASON Kidd because HE IS a wife beater. No one wished any harm on the players wives nor have they ever. Boston fans have more class than that.
"They are not good fans" incorrect. Every franchise including the nets would killl to have fans like they have in boston because they give other teams hell and make the home team feel like soemone actually cares. compare that to the NETS who cant even sell out PLAYOFF games! If anything boston fans have been critisized for being losers with nothing better to do than learn about sports which is why they are the most educated fans in sports. Dont believe me? go to a red sox or celtics game and ask ANY fan some question about the team.90% of them will be able to talk your ear off about stats, history and ethics of the game. You think they do that in sacramento?? basketball is a fad there right now because they know they have a team with a chance for a championship. I went to a Pistons game at the beginning of last year and asked everyone around me how they thought the Pistons new players were going to do this year. not ONE of them knew who I was talking about. they were just like.."uh, yeah...hes gonna KICKASS..GOOO PISTONS!!!!"
The biggest issue here is that Byron Scotts team is ahead 2-0. WHY for any reason would he add more fule to the fire undeer the celtics?? All hes done is make them hungrier, angrier, and set a bad example for his own players.
Byron Scott has awakened a sleeping giant and the Celtics wil no doubt be motivated to absolutley rip the nets apart. This series may not be over quite yet...

Scott must have some old Laker hate left in him. I'd be willing to bet that as the fans get loud on Scott during game #3, his players will be wondering why he ever opened his trap in the first place. There are some racial problems within the city but I've never seen a player dumped on because of his skin color at the Boston Garden or Fenway Park. The fans of Boston were loving Bill Russell, Satch Sanders and Sam & KC Jones before Byron Scott was ever born. I'm glad he made the comments because now I can't wait for the game to start.

The fans of Boston have been "embracing the black athlete" since the Celtics were the first team in the NBA to break the color barrier with Chuck Cooper in 1950.

Olskool, I remember quite well our discussion where you called Boston fans racist. It looks bad when you flip-flop now. And as for Boston fans loving their team, I also remember quite well when the Pistons put a beatdown on the Celts in Boston earlier this year and the Celt fans were cheering the Pistons, and groaned the rare times they missed a bucket. Sounds real loyal to me.

Youre comparing apples to oranges. Of course the fans are gonna start cheering the other team. THey weere winning by FIFTY!!! its a once in a lifetime situation and besides that doesnt make them any less educated about the game. and I didnt even say anything about scotts racism comments. I hate gerry Callahan but he wrote a very good article in todays boston herald which i would give the link to if u could read columinists online for free. maybe soeone else can pirate one or sumthing. he said even if there are some racist fans in boston byron scott is in a very hypocritical and uneducated position having never spent an extended period of time in bnoston but having played in LA where rodney king was beaten to a pulp on film and now in New Jersey where there also is well documented cases of race related police brutality.
again, The biggest issue here is that Byron Scotts team is ahead 2-0. WHY for any reason would he add more fule to the fire undeer the celtics?? All hes done is make them hungrier, angrier, and set a bad example for his own players.

I think he's right to an extent. They are like he says when the play New Jersey, it's just a rivalry. Other than that apart from the few drinks before game they are well behaved.

Wait, you're kidding me. 5 of Boston's best and most popular athletes aren't white. Manny, Pedro, Troy Brown, Pierce, and walker. If you have never been to a Celtics game please don't discuss how Celtic fans are. The thing on the fans cheering Detroit, why is thjat a big deal. Your team is down 40 points and the other team can't miss, it happens sometimes. If a team with as good defense as the Pistons hits all their shots you can't win.

get real,a fan did go after walker because he sucked it up...thats a clear fact...and why would i be biased? pistons are the ones who embarassed the celtics in the season not the other way around..i could care less what celtics did to Detroit 10/20 years ago...this is now....pistons are on the rise while celtics seem not to be..time to trade walker i think for boston to get anywhere.

And where i said scott may have been right.....i meant about the crazy fans part...trying to attack your own team player..what great fans they are.

if you think that one fan accuratly represents a group of millions your not bias, just stupid. honeslty youre going to have a hard time convincing ANYONE who knows what theyre talking about that boston doesnt ahve some of the best sports fans in the world. look at the red sox. 84 years oif mysery and fans still sell out the place. The celtics have lived through their own curse. You think the PISTONS could lose two franchise players to cocaine sending the franshice into a decade long tailspin and still have a new generationg of enthusiastic fans making the place one of the loudest in the playoffs??? YAH FRIGGING RIGHT! only in boston baby. and yes you ARE bitter about the celtics. they humiliated the pistons 10/20 yeasr ago AND last year in the playoffs. you were as miserable as i am now and i wish the celtics had played the psitons instead of the nets in this round cause they would have won again. Boston historically just has detroits number. thats the ony,lr reason you persist in talknig so much crap about Walker and Boston.

 Go get a clue, boston won last year because stack choked and played terrible..we have RIP now who is averaging 25 a game in the playoffs...we had atkins starting last year..he didn't do a good job...we have billups this year who has been great....we beat magic and we are beating down the sixers 2-0 right now..celtics are weaker than last year..you traded anderson for fat boy baker...celtics have gotten worse while pistons have gotten better...we beat boston by 52 this year..remember? celtics need a trade or they are going to continue to be a average team while we are going to improve even more next year...loads of celtics fans are wanting walker to get traded....they are saying bascally what i have been saying....if pistons had faced celtics we would of won in 5...tops

Yea FRIGGIN right!! [IMG] I cant believe you just said the celtics only won that series because Stackhouse Choked. If the series was relly ttttthat close than why were the Celtics ONE victory away from a SWEEP huh? huh? they won because they were just plain better at every facet of the game and walker TORCHED the pistons. even if the pistons faced the celts in the playoffs and beat them this year, rthey wouldnt do it as fast or as effortless as teh celtcs beat the pistons last year. need proof? the Pistons were Lucky just to get past the BOTTOM seed orlando magic! OUCH! get a clue

Celtics were better than the pistons last year..but they aren't this season.....celtics are weak this year...pistons are playing good basketball in the playoffs while boston are about to get swept...celtics had anderson, rogers both who played key role last year..pierce had a better season last year..although he as been good he has shoot badly compared to last year..we had atkins starting last year..he is a bench player now..we have billups who has played great for us and in the playoffs...we had on one who could score 30+ a game last year..we do this year..RIP has been great also in the playoffs..while stack was a joke last year..he couldn't hit anything. Also we have two very good rookies in prince and okur..who wasn't there last year..there is a big difference to our team than last year...

ok. the pistons are a little better than last year. the celtics are a little worse. but you are exagerrating. come on. Even YOU thought the Pistons were about to get downed by the Magic. what makes you think than the celtics wouldnt have just as good a chance. you rrrrrrrrreally think the magic are that much ebtter than the celtics? uh...no. The celtics are better for losing kenny anderson. the only thing that made them significantly worse was baker and he doesnt even play anymore. and yes pierce was ver dissapointing this year as was walker. theyll both return to form and be much better nextr year. even withthe dissapointemtns, they were still the best duo in the eastern conferance

I did think pistons would lose to magic when we were down 3-1..but the chauncey billups i watched all season finally came to play....big ben was heathly again and RIP was playing really well and scoring alot of points....it is a difference of opinion...pistons v celtics won't happen..it is all guesses on who would of won...no facts there..but pistons did get alot better this year...and thats why we are doing better...i wasn't that confident going into last years playoffs because i knew we only had 1 main scorer..and he played terrible..but this year we have two..billups and RIp..thats why i'm not surprised how well we are doing.

Im not either. It owuld have been a huge dissapointment if the Magic had beat them, but the fact is, it almost happened so you cant safely say how good they are. they were a hair away from being upset. the celtics wernt supposed to last more than 5 games. they were the underdog and they were the ones who proved somehitng positive about themselves that no one thought they could do

To judge all fans in one city on the actions of one guy, who was probably drunk (no excuse) is totally classless; nice job allnet.

Boston fans can be rough on their team when they are stinking up the joint but as I said earlier, it has nothing to do with color. And as I said in another thread, Red Auerbach, the man behind this whole Celtic family thing, saw one color and that color was 'Celtic Green'. Championships were important (obviously with 16 of them), the color of the players in the uniforms never mattered. Bill Russell, Larry Bird, Sam Jones, Kevin McHale, JoJo White, John Havlicek, KC Jones, Tommy Heinsohn, Satch Sanders, Bob Cousy.....etc. it just didn't matter.
