yet again i have something from espn:

i saw this a couple of weeks ago

espn made this into a tourney thingy. they broke down the greatest atheletes of all time. they broke everything down and compared everyone to everything and such.

who do you think the greatest football atheletes of ALL-TIME are?

    my top 5(no order)
    1. joe montana
    2. dan marino
    3. walter payton
    4. jerry rice(w/ the 49ers)
    5.brett favre

of course theres still time for:
    1. mike vick
    2. tom brady
    3. randy moss
a few other really young players

    your opinions

5 greatest ever i would not put favre because i cant be sure he hasnt worked out deals with several atheletes to allow him to get touchdown passes in exchange for ints later. I think using the word athelete is wrong for that list and i think player might be a better word. As an athelete rice and payton were great but marino was a statue with a arm, a golden arm.

dude its impossible to judge the "best ever" for a few reasons.

1-the game has evolved since the 1930s
    2-different positions produce different stats

the game has changed a LOT, if you put someone like Jim Thorpe of back then, in todays game he wouldnt be the player he was then.

and you cant say the best player was "Montana" because he never played a diff. position. there are different stats, and different ways to influence and dominate and take over a game in football

i think football is the only if one of the few sports that cant have a overall "best player" of all time. if you did that youd have to go by each position.

    mine would be...

    WR-Rice and Alworth
    RB-Payton and Brown
    QB-Elway
    TE-sharpe
o-line i dont know alot about but Mike Webster© and Jacky Slater(T) gene upshaw(G)
    S-Ronnie Lott and Rod Woodson
CB-Dieon and Dick "Night train" Lane
LB-LT,Ray Lewis, Dick Butkus(yea they were both MLB but so u cant pick between them) also Ray Nitsky(spelling)
    DE-Reggie White and Deacon Jones
DT-Warrenn Sapp and Mean Joe Green

    coach-Bill Walsh

OK. I'll say Montana should be 1st! I like to Aggrivate Dale and Beef, but I really would put Dan Marino right on his heels. What an arm. Those passing records for yardage and TD are gonna' stand for awhile!

Great point dawk the game has changed alot and since i didnt get to see some of them players other then on a black and white tv cam. I will give a updated opinon on who i beleive is the best alltime.

1.Walter sweetness payton. The greatest ever and always will be!

2.Joe montana, man was clutch and knew how to win.

3.Ray lewis tho he is current he takes defenses and puts them on his back.Leads by example a true dominant force!

    4. Jerry rice the best ever to play his postion, our alltime leader in tds over 200 of them.

    5. Barry sanders tho he never won a thing, was thee most exciting rb i ever seen put in cleets. Truley gods gift for rb's along with sweetness.

Without a doubt Steve Young. There has never been a QB with his combination of accuracy, elusiveness, rushing ability. Super Bowls aside, I think he was the most physically gifted QB of all time

Did you know he has the most Rushing TD's of any QB of all time???

you should take off nitske, he is soooooo overrated and only started a few years.
kansas city had a linebacker who was way better, i cant remember his name right now, singletary was better also. steelers had a couple who were better

The greatest football players of all-time?Here goes:

    1) Jerry Rice --- why you ask?200 tds. nuff said.

    2) Barry Sanders --- could possibly have rushed for 20, 000 yards in his career had he not retired prematurely.

    3) Dan Marino --- had he won a Superbowl, probably would be ranked in front of Montana.

    4) -(tie) --- Reggie White and Bruce Smith --- both have nearly or have 200 career sacks.

    5) Jim Brown --- ruled his generation.

    6) Joe Montana and Steve Young --- some experts say Young was better than Montana. Tough call

    7) -(tie)--- Walter Payton and Emmith Smith --- they're consistency and most notably, they were both indestructable is was stands out about them.

    8) Pick one: John Elway, Peyton Manning or Brett Favre

9)-(tie) OJ Simpson and Eric Dickerson

    10) Randy Moss

    11) Ronnie Lott

    12) Ray Lewis

    13) Pick one: Marshall Faulk, Priest Holmes or LaDainian Tomlinson

    14) Deon Sanders

    15) Tom Brady

i can tell cadillac you are a young guy because your list is skewed to the modern day player. The fact you put brady on the list and not John Unitas I think is an insult to him, if it is intentional.

To rank barry sanders over payton is crazy, payton could have played 2 more years when he retired he retired to get into ownership. He was a better player but not a better runner. He caught better, blocked better, tackled better(had 18 tackles on defenders who had just made a int one year) he was a better power runer(look at TD difference). Even Emmit and jim brown didnt do all the things payton did, payton played QB for game.

You also put Faulk in same group as tomlinson and holmes. Holmes has had 3 good seasons that is it. Tomlison is well no his way to being a true great. Faulk is a hands down hall of famer and at this point outclasses both of those players.

I do like how you mixed players in from several positions, but you gave no love to offensice lineman, so how bout you throw out on your next post who your favorite OL of all time is. I will give some love to matt suhey as my favorite FB of all time [IMG]

Barry sanders without a doubt was oustanding and the fact is he avg more yards a carry in less seasons then sweetness, unfortantly both rbs played in two diffrenct times. Sweetnees was more complete and its why he is the greatest ever.

Marshall faulk was a second better coming of a roger craig type rb and his numbers are outstanding, however his injurys have effected him.

Tom brady is unbeaten in the playoffs and he has won all his superbowls, so naturally people will assume his greatness. His
    story is still being written.

As for tomlinson if tomlinson continues what he does he can catch emitts record, however marty ball may shorten his career. Its usually after 10 seasons on the avg a rb's numbers decline.
