Nowitzki not yet ready to return for Mavs

If the Mavericks want to save their season, they'll again have to do it without Dirk Nowitzki.

Dallas coach Don Nelson said Tuesday that Nowitzki will not play Tuesday night in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals against the Spurs. San Antonio leads the best-of-seven series 3-1.

Nowitzki, who suffered sprained ligaments in his left knee during Game 3 and did not play in Game 4, took part in Tuesday morning's shootaround, but he was shooting for a stationary position and did not move much around the court.

Nelson added that Nowitzki's knee has not improved much.

"I don't really have pain. It doesn't really hurt. But I can feel that something is not right with my knee,'' Nowitzki told The Associated Press on Monday. To me, it's got to feel right. If I have any doubts that I can't push off, or have thoughts that I can't get out of my head, then I'm not going to play.''

Mavericks coach Don Nelson was hoping Nowitzki would at least be able to play 3-on-3 Monday. He couldn't, partly because he pushed himself too hard on Sunday.

Nowitzki worked out before Game 4 in hopes of making it into the lineup just two days after being injured. But he wasn't able to run or jump, so he watched San Antonio's 102-95 victory from a seat near the Dallas bench.

Should Dallas force a sixth game, it would be Thursday night in Dallas. Nowitzki said his availability would still be a game-time decision.

"I think the longer the series goes, the more chance Dirk has to play,'' Nelson told The AP on Monday.

I think that Van Exel, Fin-lay and Nash will have to STEP UP HUGE if they are going to have a prayer of a chance in winning in San Antionio but yet they did beat SA without Dirk in the regular season *yes i know Reg season is diffrent from playoffs but anything can happen*

and i think Mavs still woulda lost.

charles barkley was saying how if the mavs didn't go all the way now, they won't for a loooong time. i agree. they're not going anywhere until they get a REAL center/big man. that's all mark cuban's fault. he turned down the chance to get Donyell Marshall, Brian Grant, and Keon Clark. Not smart.

Barkley is a moron and always will be..don't take what he say seriously...mavs if they don't win it this year won't win it for a long time? thats rubbish..cuban will likely sign a few guys this summer...rumoured they could get malone..mavs will be right up there next season and for years to come. They have had a great season...60 wins and making the WCF...nothing wrong with that.

not only did they force game 6 in Dallas, Nellie said that there is a good posibility that Dirk will be able to play in game 6. I still hold out faith for my mavs, we managed a split with arguably our best player, we still don't have Bradley and Eschmeyer, LaFrentz has been our only post option, and yet we still manage to get a win? I'm still picking Mav's in 7, with the Spurs blowing a lead in the 4th quarter to loose the series, I hope they enjoy the taste of that bitter pill all summer.

Is Kurt Thomas really that great on defense? He seems to get in foul trouble alot.
