Dallas Mavericks coach Don Nelson echoed his owner Sunday, saying that he is on the verge of securing a formally signed contract extension, just as Mark Cuban suggested Saturday night.

"Mark has offered me a three-year extension and that's what I wanted," Nelson told ESPN.com. "We're just working out the language of the contract.

"I don't anticipate any problems. I want to stay and Mark wants me to be the coach. When those things are in line, something's going to get done."

The coaching portion of Nelson's 11-year, $22 million contract extension from the spring of 2000 expired after this season. After Cuban insisted he would not discuss a coaching extension until after the season, rebuffing multiple requests from Nelson for an extension, the Mavericks started the season 14-0 and won 60 games for the first time in franchise history before advancing to the Western Conference finals.

While Nelson recharged for two weeks at his off-season home in Maui, Cuban prepared a revised package that adds three seasons of coaching duty to the three GM-only seasons stipulated in Nelson's current contract.

When the revised contract is finalized, expected early this week, Nelson will have three more seasons as coach-GM -- a dual role for which he has been paid just over $5 million annually the past three seasons. That would take Nelson to age 66, after which the contract still calls for five years as a Mavericks consultant at $250,000 per season.

"We had an agreement before -- that he wanted to come back and (that) I wanted him back," Cuban said Saturday night. "The only thing new is that there is a document in lawyers' hands for review.

"No deal is done until it's done, but as I have always said, I expect him to be back and he has said he expects to be back."</div>
