<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">As usual, Pistons President Joe Dumars is conducting his business beneath the national radar. Thus, the Pistons have not been mentioned among those teams on the short list for free agent Juwan Howard.

    But, Dumars confirmed, they are.

The Pistons are among the front-runners to land Howard, the 6-foot-9 power forward from Michigan.

Dumars would not comment, but acknowledged that the Pistons were in the hunt along with Orlando, Minnesota and the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I want to win," Howard said in an interview with Sporting News radio. "That has always been my goal since Day One, since I stepped foot in the NBA. I have had an opportunity to win at all levels, college and high school. Now, I am in a position that I can make a decision to go anywhere I want to go, and I am excited about that."

Howard, who averaged 18.4 points and 7.6 rebounds with the Nuggets last season, is 30 years old and entering his 10th NBA season.

"I am not pinpointing any particular date, or targeting any particular date," Howard said. "I am just going to continue to evaluate each situation and weigh the pros and cons."

The Pistons originally offered Denver a sign-and-trade package that was believed to have included Zeljko Rebraca, Hubert Davis, Chucky Atkins and perhaps either Cliff Robinson or Corliss Williamson. The Nuggets rejected that offer.

Dumars now is offering the full mid-level exception, which would pay Howard $4.9 million next season. Over six years, that deal would pay $38,587,500.

Dumars characterized Howard's interest in the Pistons as "serious."

Minnesota and the Lakers would be offering the same package. The Lakers, though, only want Howard if their efforts to sign Alonzo Mourning fail.

The Orlando Magic have two offers pending. One is a sign-and-trade involving point guard Darrell Armstrong. That would allow Howard to start a six-year deal at $5.5 million. The other offer is the $4.9 million mid-level exception.

Howard has said that his only prerequisite is the team's ability to compete for a championship.

"I do whatever teams want me to do," Howard told The Sporting News. "In Dallas, I was the fourth option and I accepted that role and we made it to the second round and won over 50 games. In Denver, they wanted me to be the go-to guy. I accepted and put up 19 points a game."

In nine NBA seasons, Howard has averaged 17.9 points and 7.5 rebounds.

Seems many teams are interested every day..it was suppose to be wolves or magic..now we back in the face for howard

Keep messing with the team? how? i don't see how adding one player could make us worst..if we get howard we will be alot better as he solves our rebounding problems, low post play and adds scoring......i don't want rose...but that likely isn't a true rumour anyway

Howard would be the perfect addition for the Pistons, although I wonder what their starting line-up will be... isn't he a PF? But no way they're gonna start Wallace on the bench or at SF... so Howard will probably play SF...

    C- Milicic
    PF- Wallace
    SF- Howard
    SG- Hamilton
    PG- Billups

if howard was smart he would go to the wolves or pistons..if he wanted a ring straight away...go to L.A....if he wanted to go to a place with great weather got to Orlando [IMG]

Acording to insider..they expect him to go the wolves
