Mavs sign first round pick Josh Howard

    DALLAS -- The Dallas Mavericks signed first-round draft pick Josh Howard to a contract Thursday.

    Howard was the 29th overall pick in last week's draft and according to the 2003-04 NBA rookie scale his three-year deal would be worth about $2.1 million.

    The 6-foot-6 Howard was a first team All-American and was the Atlantic Coast Conference's Player of the Year as a senior at Wake Forest. He led the school to its first ACC regular-season title in 41 years, averaging 19.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals.

    He will play on the Mavericks' Long Beach and Utah summer league teams later this month. "We are happy to have a quality player like Josh,'' said Don Nelson, Mavericks head coach and general manager.

    "Our style of play is Josh's forte, so I think he will be a great fit. We are looking for good things to come from him in the future.''

    Howard was the first Demon Deacon picked in the first round since Tim Duncan was the No. 1 overall pick by San Antonio in 1997.</div>

    good i guess. if he does as well as he did at college, he will be special, but i don't think he will be that good.

    what so they were the only steals? there was a chance that lampe wasnt even gonna play, and sofo isn't even that good.

    howard is nt a steal yet they have to play games first but sofo and lampe were suppost to be first round locks . no one is a steal yet.
