<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">espite the best recruiting efforts of Celtics director of basketball operations Danny Ainge, it appears free agent power forward Karl Malone will remain in the West. On Friday, KSL-TV in Salt Lake City reported that Ainge had visited Malone in his Salt Lake City home. The meeting took place as soon as teams could speak with free agents at 10 p.m. MDT Monday, which made it July 1 on the East coast. Ainge went so far as to meet with Malone's agent, Dwight Manley, Wednesday in Los Angeles. ''Danny has vigorously recruited Karl since the very beginning of the free agency period,'' said general manager Chris Wallace. ''But at this point, all indications are that he is likely to stay in the Western Conference.'' The front-runners for Malone's services include the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio Spurs. Dallas and Utah, the team for which Malone played for 18 seasons, are also suitors. Malone wants to play for a team with a strong chance to win a championship. According to the Los Angeles Times, Malone told the Lakers he was willing to play for whatever sum worked best for the team if it made signing point guard Gary Payton easier. According to other published reports, Malone will not make a decision until next week at the earliest. Free agents are not permitted to sign contracts until July 16. </div> http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/187/spor...d_Malone+.shtml
