Of course not, they just used a little something called territorial draft rights which means if they convince a certain player to go to a college within a certain distance of them then they have the right to draft them. That's probably a big reason why Cousy and Havliciek went to Holy Cross, and it's the same reason why Red Auerbach along with many more NBA teams tried to get Wilt to go to a college near them.</div>

exactly. it was ingenius scouting and foresight, not just being an economic juggernaut

So you would have no problem with the fact that they used that method to have six hall of famers on their team at one time? What's the difference? They are/were both using the rules to make their team stronger. The Lakers aren't breaking any salary cap rules just as the Celts weren't breaking any rules then.

theres a big difference. The Lakers owe all of their championsships to the top dollar free agent signings of already established NBA superstars. First it was Wilt. than Kareem. Now Shaq. because they have those cornerstone players other superstars jujst go there for orange juice and walnuts cause they figure its an easy championship. The Celtics dynastys were formed as i said with ingenious scouting and foresight. you think ANYONE knew what havlicek, heinson, russell, cousy and sharman were going to be before they played on the celtics. only red auerbach and only he knew how to get them in his corner and it wasnt just by throwing money at them

yes the lakers and celtics have had a history of finding the loopholes and being creative in signing players. they are able to think outside the box and create their own rules and once the nba finally catches up to them they have already found another way to beat the system. you have to admire both franchises for being innovative. neither is breaking the rules. also it's not just what the laker's franchise has to offer, it's also the city of los angeles. there is a lot of money to be made outside of basketball when you play in los angeles.

No rules are being broken though, right? They both are using what they have to their advantage. These guys choose to go there on their own. Also the Lakers wouldn't have any championships without the guys they brought up themselves. Ya know, guys like Jerry West, Elgin Baylor (I believe), Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, and Worthy.

yes. thats also a good point. im not trying to put the lakers down here. its just frustrating to a lot of other teams to see the lakers already witht their three rings today and tehy have to get two mroe major free agent superstars and it doesnt even hurt their payroll. Its a shame how it turned out though for the celtics. If Shaq and Kobe had both before their primes or before playing a game theyd be in the same place as teh celtics are now and vice versa for teh celts if tehy bias and lewis had not. thats how significant those losses were. though even then not nearly as significant as the lossses for their familys

cuban and the maloofs are a testament to the old addage ... "it takes money to make money." you have to spend that money to get the players, to get the wins, to get the fans, to get your money back.

or you can be on the other end of the spectrum like donald sterling and keep your overhead low and sell the fans on youth and excitement and watching visiting stars come to town. the clippers actually advertise their opponents coming to town instead of their own players. by the 10 game package featuring mcgrady, jordan, kg, and duncan against the clippers.

the worst you could be is jeremy jacobs the scrooge like owner of the Boston Bruins. what i wouldnt give for some debillitating accident to happen to him. im not wishing death on him. im not crazy. but some horrible injury or mental illness that made him unable to continue his job so his family had to sell the team to some rich bastad who gives a flying FUCK

i remember the Lakers trading a legitimate 7' skilled center for an unproven 18 year old kid straight out of high school before drafting high school players was all the rage...and i remember a lot of people calling them crazy too...and i remember the lakers stealing eddie jones at the 10 spot in the draft, stealing van-exel in the mid second round...does that count as quality scouting and foresight?

the Bulls did that last season. it wasn't because they were cheap. just because they sucked. they had commercials w/ people saying, "oo, i love seeing the lakers and kings" etc. i hated it.

The Golden State Warriors do that too. They tried to do some "great wall" package where you get tickets to see Yao Ming with the Rockets, Wang with the Mavs, and Mengke with the Nuggets. Well, Wang ended up going to the Clips, and Mengke never played so that plan went to hell.
