Personally I think the 66-67 and 82-83 Sixers teams would be pretty hard to beat out as the best teams ever. Though when there is a team that has two players who are top three all-time in their positions (Shaq and Malone), with a great point guard, and ARGUABLY the most talented SG in the league there is always a chance for great things to happen. Also can't forget the great Celtics teams that had up to six hall of famers on their team at once.

An ESPN Magazine writer said that this is the second best team ever on paper. He said this tonight on Sportscenter.

I think the best team ever was the 1964-65 Boston Celtics. They went 62 - 18 (.775). Their main players were John Havlicek, Tom Sanders, Tommy Heinsohn, Bill Russell, and Sam Jones. They of course won the Championship this year. It was their seventh consecutive championship. They played the Sixers in the Finals. Remember this Johnny Most quote from the Finals? "Havlicek stole the ball!" Undoubtidly the best team ever.

shucks...dont get me started on that quote. argueably the geatest radio moment in basketball history. they were an incredible team but so were the 70-12 bulls. also consider the 1912 (or was it 1921) new york rens who won 112 games

They were obviously before my time though so I can't really judge them. It was a whole different type of basketball back then.

I bought this book called At the Buzzer I think. Anyway, it documents great moments in NBA History and comes with two audio CDs that explains the stories that the book talks about. Havilcek's steal is one that always seems to send shivers down my spine.

Anyway, I think the 66-67 Sixers were as great as any team. The broke the Celts 8 championship win streak. They featured Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunningham, Hal Greer, Chet Walker, Matt Guokas, and Luke Jackson.

The 82-83 Sixers also have to be mentioned and had one of the best starting lineups in history. Dr. J, Moses, Andrew Toney, Maurice Cheeks, and Bobby Jones.

Spartanfan: Buy the NBA Encyclopedia. It's expensive, but it gives a great history on the league, leagues before the league, and teams like the Rens.

I also have that audio book by the way. Bill Walton's narration made me sick though. He has an awful voice.

I didn't think I'd have time to read it either, but time goes by pretty fast when you read it. I was interested enough in hearing the players perspective on some plays in that book to not get sick when I was listening, but it gets annoying.

no way is this the best team ever, not even close. it's a great group, but the bench is still horrible and the celtic dynasty, philly team, and the showtime lakers are better.

GP and Malone are great additions to this Laker team, and they certainly are among the favorites for the title next season.
We just have to see how they all glue together, how will they adjust to this new situation?
