ok, about 20 minutes ago i was walking on the boardwalk with some friends, and we walk past this antique car shop, and theres a huge crowd so we walk over and its hugh douglas and i couldnt tell who the other 1 was but i think Troy vincent, or maybe ty law but i doubt it, but he had that big bulky body that they both have. we tried to go up and talk to them, so just thought id share that.
You know, you never realize exactly how large these men are until you stand next to them. I happened to walk under the shadow of Bryant McKinney at a Cheesecake Factory...that is one HUGE man. Of all the sports celebrities that I have met, Kirby Puckett was the only one who was not physically imposing when I saw him.
I was in court for a traffic ticket once, and I saw Glen Foley. That guy was such a dick, and the last thing he was was imposing.
I met Charles Haley once. He wasn't terribly physically imposing. He was a pretty nice guy though. He was with the American Red Cross for a blood drive/marrow typing event. We went to get on the marrow registry. He was playing nerf football with all of the kids on the floor and having a grand old time. He came over to where I was standing in line (maybe he saw the Chiefs jacket?) and asked if I kept up with football and if I knew who he was. I told him I did and used to be a fan. I was teasing him about not liking him anymore since he joined the Cowboys. I think I even called him a traitor (all in jest, of course) he was laughing about it all. He seemed like a genuinely nice guy.
At a Collinsworth charity Golf tourney, when I was much younger I approached Vinny Testeverde for an autograph while he was eating with his wife....he refused, telling me and my brothers that it was inappropriate to ask him for things when hes eating lunch with his family(he was right about that)....5 minutes later, Im standing on the 1st tee looking for any other players and he comes up to us and motions to me for the football....I tossed it to him and figured he was going to sign it, but then he said" Go Long", so I did....I ran a streak right down the fairway and he tossed an effortless bomb right over my shoulder....he played with us for half an hour, sending us on routes and throwing soft strikes into our hands....Then Jim Kelly walked up and asked me for the football, so i tossed it to him....he threw a long one to my brother, and then commented to Vinny that he should spike me, since I was wearing my full Dolphins garb....then Kelly went on his way....Boomer Esiason walked by and threw one, on his way through, Cris Collinsworth walked through and played for a minute and Nat Moore played for a minute or so, but Vinny stayed and played with us when they all had left....I asked if I could take some pictures while we played, and he agreed so I have some great shots of Vinny tossing the ole' pigskin around with me and brothers, then he insisted on a group photo, which we took, and then he went on his way....I cant imagine an NFL player going much farther than that to make a couple of group of 12 year old boys happier.....
wow... that must haev been pretty cool... wish i couldve have been there...im sure sooner or later im meet a football player.
That was a great story. It's always nice to hear that there are some guys that aren't just in it to "get paid". It's effortless to spend money, but takes a big hear to give time....
Tough to top that one Beef. That is a 12-year-olds dream come true. Actually, I would take that now at my age. I played pick-up football games in college with Kurt Warner, Kenny Shedd, and Dedric Ward. Ward was fast enough, but Shedd was scary fast. It game me a good taste of what NFL speed is like. I have some good stories from those games.
I later met Charles Mann when I worked at Disney, along with gymnist Dominique Dawes....lots of famous people go through there, and I got to see a lot of them, but those were the only 2 I met....for the record, Charles Mann is huge, very tall and muscular, and Dawes is tiny, I think I could carry her around in my pocket....
All of the DWO will love this... Rigth before the last game of the season against the Phins in 2002 I saw Lawyor Milloy at a local mall and just living close to the stadium you tend to see them on the highway alot during training camp but anyways I saw he was buying video games at a KB toy store. He was pretty cool to me and my girl so when I was talking to him I was like "whats it like tackling guys like Ricky Williams that run with that type of power and I quote him " any man caught dead in a dress is a fu##ing FAG, he aint shit". I was laughing all the way home. So come sunday though ricky had the last laugh at the tune of 180 yards and he absolutly tanked Lawyor about 20 yards down field on one play. I still couldn't believe he said that to me though. For those of you wondering about what Video game it was...I believe it was a Tom Clancy game...Maybe Rainbow 6 or something.
i saw troy vincent again, he was playin in a restaurant. i know players hate this but i walked up and asked for a autograph and told him i loved him when he was a eagle, and saw him up in lehigh and when i watched them practice i focused on watching the DBs, he laughed and said he appreciated it. i convinced him to sign my eagles hat even though he wasnt a eagle anymore and he gave in. i wished him luck in buffalo, i always thought troy had the most class of any other player in the league and that proves it again.
