I really doubt Delvin Brown (SG/SF) will get any playing time at all..... I mean look the Spurs already has Manu, Bowen, Mercer, and Turkoglu in the SG and SF positions, plus Kerr plays SG once awhile, too. Devin is probably going to spend most of time on the injured list, but definately a decent replacement if someone ever gets injured though.

I completly agree. The Spurs have a lot of depth at the SG/SF position so I cant see Brown getting harldy any playing time. His only chance of playing is if there are a few injuries to the SG/Sf players for the Spurs. He will most likely sit the pine the entire season. Alot of players can do awesome in summer league then come in and completly suck in the the regular season. It doesnt look like he will get his oppurtunity to prove himself this year.

This is a low risk, high potential return for them. A mininum salary. But he could be a major role player for them in a few years.

Bowen, Ginobili, Mercer, Turkoglu, are all ahead of him at the wing spot.

Mercer, Turkoglu, and Ginobili are all FA after this season.

Ginobili will be resigned. Mercer will most likely be let go. And Turkoglu could be resigned if he goes around the 3-5 million area(and shows he is worth keeping).

So lets say all that happens. Ginobili/Bowen are your starters. Hedo comes off the bench for a reasonable price(if he shows he's worth it). You still need another wing player. Brown would likely be making the minimum still. This allows San Antonio to keep him, and he will get PT in the neighborhood of 10 minutes/game. San Antonio then proves this to be a smart signing, bec. at a minimum salary, if he can give you 10 strong minutes a game, its great.

Remember, San Antonio also has to worry about the luxury tax as well, regardless of the fact that they are the defending champs. They are a small market team as well, and need to avoid the luxury tax to turn profits.

Minimum salaries for role players does that. San Antonio could be preparing for the future with this type of signing. Remember, Ginobili needs to be resigned. Parker will need to be eventually too. Add in Duncans/Rasho's combined 20 million+ a year, Rose's $6 million, and its coming very close to the salary cap.

Add in Bowens' contract, and there bench.......and suddenly the luxury tax is getting closer and closer.

Good point Vintage. This could turn into a good deal for the Spurs. If he turns out to be what they want then they have a steal in his minimum salary however if he doesnt turn out then it is really no big loss as they havent wasted hardly any money on him. Now Im not convinced of this player yet though. I mean he might have done well in the NBDL but lets remember thats the NBDL. The same could be said for summer league where most teams leave their stars behind so they can see what "new" players to the league do they possibly want to sign to a contract. Most of the players in the Summer League arent going to make a pro team. Dominating the NBDL and doing good in Summer League mean absolutely nothing to me when I look at the regular season. So you are right Vintage, if this guy pans out that is great, and if he busts thats ok too in a way.

Yep. For a minimum salary, its worth the gamble to take a look at this kid. Doesn't hurt them financially too much, and it could have a good return. If not, its easy to cut their losses with him. San Antonio doesn't really need to add a star. What they need to start doing is finding cheap, quality role players to fill the voids they will depart with after this season(Horry, Mercer, Willis).

Thats what this signing IMO is about. Its starting to look ahead and trying to find a decent role player down the road. It could also be as simple as just filling their roster out too.

I doubt he ever becomes a starter in the league. But if he can ever give SA a solid 10min/game, its a worthwhile signing.

Pretty good signing. He just needs to remember that this is gonna be the NBA, NBDL. Scoring will be much harder because he's going against better players on offense and defense than NBDL players.
