<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Vintage:</div><div class="quote_post">Its all about prespective. LaFrentz had a 60+million/ 6 year extension. There is no way Martin will want less than that(nor his agent). They will use this as a base to which Martin should be paid Now, Thorn will use Brand's contract and use that as a base to which Martin should be paid(less than Brand). It will all come down to how much Martin is willing to accept at or below what they(him and his agent) are offering. NJ has to be careful with his salary. They are moving dangerously close to the luxury tax area. Mutombo has a huge contract. That will not get moved. No team will take it on. They are stuck with him. Deke will be making 18 million next year(not this upcoming season, but the following.) Kidd will be making just under 15 Kittles just under 10 And Martin at 9(assuming he is signed to a LaFrentz- like contract) Thats 52 million just for 4 players. The rest of the bench puts them over the luxury tax. They will probably have a 65+ million cap. Now, the luxury tax figures to be around 55-57 million. Lets say it is set at 57 million. They are 8 over, meaning they have to pay another 8 million. $16 million lost. But teams that are below the L.T. get some revenue back. NJ probably would get aother 3-5 million back HAD they stayed BELOW the luxury tax area. They aren't, so they lose another 3-5 million. Total losses: $20 million To a small market, its huge.........They might not even make a profit that year(and basketball is a business). The good news is that Kittles' contract, Rogers, as well as Deke's, expire after that year, freeing up $23 million. But Brandon Armstrong, Richard Jefferson, and Jason Collins will all need to be extended at that point. Kittles will be a FA. Aaron Williams has a player option at 3.375 million, which he will use(he wont get more money elsewhere, so he will use it). There goes all that room you saved from Deke and Kittles. Jefferson will probably get somewhere around 6-8 million(more than ERob), Collins(5-7), and Armstrong will most likely be let go. So those 2 can probably take anywhere from 13-15 million(maybe more) of the 23 million you saved. Kittles would then be let go. There is no way NJ could afford another year like that. So in total, you saved about 8-10 million. More like 8, after the draft. So now NJ payroll enters the season at around $58 million. That will be right at the borderline. If they are over, it will only be by a million or so, and they WILL dump someone to stay below. But dont forget, Kristic is coming over too......that adds another million. They will be dangerously close to the L.T. They will want relief, and they will be forced to dump someone who might be a key part of their team to avoid the salary cap ramifications.</div> Please, someone read this. I am not trying to sound pompous, arrogant, or "all knowing," but it does explain some things.
Marion was given the maximum extension allowed under the CBA. Martin will receive somewhere in the Marion/Brand/LaFrentz area in terms of money. Not maxed.............but close. LaFrentz got a 60 million/6 year extension. It might have even been 65, I can't remember. No way Martin goes for less than that. NJ is looking at some tough decision ahead financially. Martin will get somewhere in the neighborhood of a 65/70 million for 6 year extension. Thats how it works.............agents look at players of similar caliber, and guage off of that. Really nice how Cuban made LaFrentz that nice contract, huh?
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting sportsrock37:</div><div class="quote_post">good post. it's very true, they seem almost as bad as the knicks with overpaying players.</div> The thing with NJ that is different than NY, is that NJ wasn't in this situation when they paid Kittles(they didn't have Kidd's contract demands on the horizon), Mutombo, or Martin planned. The good news is that they are in the better situation. Deke has 2 years left, as does Kittles, as does Rogers. Those 3 will be shown the door. Martin will be resigned. As will Jefferson. Luckily, the Nets have Planinic(sp?) and Harris(now) to fix that when the time comes. NY is starting to settle down as well. This year, McDyess, Ward, and Knight come off the books. All will be shown the door as well. This reduces their payroll from 82 million this season, to around 60 million next year. This saves them 44 million(22*2- since they have to pay penny for penny).
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting sportsrock37:</div><div class="quote_post">^^^ must be the knicks235 jinx(2 fav teams are knicks and nets)</div> lol then GO magic!!!
i really hope kittles and rogers will be traded for players with 1 year left so HOPFULLY we can land kobe
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting knicks235:</div><div class="quote_post">i really hope kittles and rogers will be traded for players with 1 year left so HOPFULLY we can land kobe</div> Both of those players have 2 years left. That would free up about 12 million in cap space, trading them for one expiring contract, if it could be done(doubtful). Freeing up room for Kobe doesn't mean you will land him though. 12 million wont bring in Kobe Bryant. Under the CBA, Kobe can get the max, and his first year will start out at somewhere in the high 13. something million dollars a year. Kobe wont be a Net, unless a trade occurs(unlikely......) Kobe would lose somewhere in the neighborhood of $20 million if he did that deal(signing a 6 year contract for 12 million as its 1st year). Will that cripple Kobe financially? Nope. But it still a chunk of change, something Kobe wont leave behind at this point in his career.
umm... lotta posts... Guys who want the big dollars but havnt quite earned it yet... this kinda like Reshard Lewis... and Gilbert Arenas to a lesser extend...
It seems now days that players are getting a bit greedy. To me only certain few superstarts should get the maximum allowed contract by the league. Those should be reserved for players like KG, Kobe, TMAC, Duncan, etc. Players like Marting havent proved that they deserve that type of money yet. Sure Martin is a "good" player by alot of standards but I feel the max should be set aside for the "great" players. Martin deserves to make some nice dough, he just doesnt deserve that much money.
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting Vintage:</div><div class="quote_post">Guys, guys, guys........... This is the fine art of negotiating. I doubt Martin and his agent expect to get the max. They just threw that out there. A place to start from. You always ask for more than what you are worth. Then the GM offers something that underpays you, then you meet in the middle. (Note, this only applies to people whose salary is debateable. No one doubts Duncan is a max player, so there is no need to try to apply this to him). Brand is a good starting piece as to where Martin's contract will end up. Martins agent will argue that Martin is younger, does more things for the team, wins, and its in the East where he is a premier PF and deserves Brand's contract(in terms of salary). Does he really? No. I think Martin is worth a 6 year, $50 million extension. But he will get more. LaFrentz got more. Look for Martin's contract to be somewhere in the $65 million/6 year......possibly $70 million. This will hurt NJ bad. They cannot afford to be too deep into the luxury tax area. They will have Mutombo, Kittles, Kidd, and Martin with huge salaries. NJ is a small market team. They cannot afford to do that. Look at their attendance. How they will be able to afford this blows me away. What will have to happen is a salary dump move. Harris resigned at a reasonable price, right? Look for Kittles to be dumped for a shorter contract. Harris has proven to be a capable player and could start. Now I know NJ fans will harp on me for even SUGGESTING the trade of Kittles, but look at your market base. Mutombo, Kittles, Kidd, and an extended Martin put you over the cap. Your 8-10 man bench will put you over the luxury tax considerably. Small market base, paying the luxury tax= NJ Nets losing money. You cant lose money forever. Mutombo will be next to impossible to move. Kittles is a solid SG who can defend/shoot. Overpaid? Yes. But still a good player. NJ will have to move him to stay at or below the L.T. Something will need to be done.</div> I hate to be redundant................but......... This is part of negotiation. Ask more than what you will really get. Its not a new concept. Its done all the time. Read the quoted part, it explains it better...........

You always ask for something more than your worth. Its like car salesman as they always quote you high on a car but will work down to a lower figure. My point was that too many players are getting maxed out or close to it when they should be making considerably less considering how much they produce for that team. Martin doesnt deserve 6 years at $65-70 million. He doesnt deserve anywhere near that figure for what he produces. The same could be said for Raef.

But like it or not, Kmart will get more than Raef. Raef is overpaid. And KMart will be as well as a result. Thats why Thorn has to be fuming over Dallas signing LaFrentz to that.......bec. all Martins agent has to do it point to that contract......and how could someone from Thorn's standpoint argue that LaFrentz deserves more money than Martin.
People may think I'm crazy, but, I think that Martin is worth this. Think about it, he's only 24 years old, and he's got loads of potential. His numbers just keep getting better and better every year. He does have the potential to be a 20/10 guy year in year out. And to the guy who mentioned his 3/23 game 6, you obviously don't care about the other 15 games they played in the playoffs. He lead his team in scoring throughout the playoffs and had more good performances than bad. He's gonna be worth 87mil over 6 years, and, if they don't keep him, they'll be sorry. Martin is an integeral part to that teams success and without him, they would have gone nowhere the past 2 years. Give him his max contract, it'll be worth it.
Nets owner said today..he would not give martin that kind of money..but they are in talks about an extention.
