Shouldnt Shaq Lead the League in Rebounds?

why doesnt he? for someone who spends as much time around the paint as he does, with his size and ability...shouldnt he be dominating the league or at least competing for top spot?

You're very right. He should be grabbing every board within 6 feet from the basket. Being boxed out by Shaq would be like running into a moving brick wall.

He does contend for it. He was 4th in the NBA in Rebounds Per Game. I don't think he qualified for the leaders because of the games he played or something.

id say 11 rpg compared to ben's 15 rpg isnt really contending...thats quite a few off. its close, but when i said contending, i meant like a CLOSE battle for first

Dennis Rodman used to give him crap about this. He'd say that if he was Shaq's size, he'd be grabbing 20+ boards a game. But then again, Shaq didn't study where the ball went off the rim or whether their star player missed his shots long or short. I'm sure Shaq's probably got some knowledge of that though.

Ben leads the league because he knows how to box out a defender when he is going out for the rebounds..But really i think that Yao should be leadin the league because of how tall he is..But he get pushed arond to much down low because of how much he weight if he bulked up and learned how to box out better he will lead the league..

It's not always about size. Agility is a quality helpful to pull down a board. Shaq just doesn't cradle that ability. Obviously knowledge of where the ball goes after the shot is key factor too.

What is it?...40% of the time the ball bounces back towards the shooter??? Just curious if anyone knows what the percentage of that is? It was in a book I read but I am not sure what it really is.

I think it's lack of desire for Shaq, every thing i read about rebuonding it always says there isn't much to it but desire and effort. Size helps but isn't essential as well. Ben Wallace always determined but knows how to box out. Or maybe Shaq just may not be good at rebounding. I aren't sure why his rebounds per game aren't way up there but theres gotta be a reason.

Desire to get the ball. My old coach used to say, "Pretend that ball is covered is $$$ and then use that to get it before the competion!"

Then the assistant coach would always thrown in reminders after every sentence: "But BOX OUT first!"

Can you imagine how worn down Shaq gets mentally and physically? He has 2 big forwards and a center boxing him out and grabbing his arms; litterally the whole team surrounding him.

If he goes up to get a rebound or becomes aggressive, he gets nailed for a foul.

Shaq could hustle more, but with bad toes etc. he may have a hard time. His hops are good for a 350lb. man...he could do better though..

    Just my opinion..
