<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Bulls operations chief John Paxson remembers how it felt to be a player worrying about a contract extension, which is why he recently pulled aside Jamal Crawford.

Crawford, 23, became eligible for an extension Aug. 1, and the window remains open until Oct. 30. Paxson also phoned Crawford's agent, Arn Tellem.

But the conversations weren't to negotiate as much as to establish an understanding. Paxson wants to be patient, which likely means there won't be an extension this year.

''All I expressed to Jamal is that whatever happens in this process, if something doesn't work out this year, it doesn't mean that we don't want him back,'' Paxson said. ''I'm still kind of in a patient mode with the whole process, and we don't necessarily feel something has to get done before the season.

''We're going to try to talk again some time in September.''

Without an extension, Crawford--who is entering his fourth season--would become a restricted free agent next year, which means the Bulls could match any offer extended to Crawford.

Crawford has said he wanted to sign an extension, but Paxson said Crawford is handling the situation with maturity.

''Jamal was great about it,'' Paxson said. ''He's been so good about everything this offseason.

''I think he understands. And I understand what it's like to be a player when a contract is up, and it's not an easy thing. But it's the way the system works, and no matter what happens, we still would have an opportunity to keep him.''

Paxson has to consider that Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler will be eligible for extensions next year and could sign deals for over $10 million per year. With Jalen Rose making $12 million, the Bulls could be facing the luxury tax.

But the Bulls may get cap relief if Eddie Robinson, who will make $7.2 million this season, is taken in the expansion draft next year by the Charlotte Bobcats.

Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf has said he would pay the tax for a contending team, and there is optimism about making the playoffs, but the Bulls are coming off a 30-win season.

I think we should sign Crawford for an extension now for less money instead of after this season. He's probably gonna have a career year coming up. I know we need to save up money for Eddy and Tyson, but I'm sure that'll be figured out. My favorite part of the article is where it talks about Eddie Robsinson being taken by the Bobcats [IMG] We can only hope.

It could happen. ERob was loved by Charlotte fans. We can only hope.

As for the luxury tax concerns, we are a major market team. We make tens of millions each year, despite our abmysal play. Thats one of the great things in our favor. We can pay the luxury tax and still turn profits. Not many teams can do that.

And another thing in our favor, Reinsdorf has said that he will pay the luxury tax if we are a competing team.

I don't hate him, I just don't want him on my team. He's got a huge contract and hasn't shown that he's worth all that money. He's one of the most athletic guys in the league and he's done SQUAT. Having him come off the bench isn't too bad, but that's a lot of money sitting on the bench that we coulda used for someone else.

    From the Insider -

<div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">Bulls GM Jim Paxson told Jamal Crawford that he may pass on giving the 6-foot-6 point guard an early extension. "All I expressed to Jamal is that whatever happens in this process, if something doesn't work out this year, it doesn't mean that we don't want him back," Paxson told the Chicago Sun Times. "I'm still kind of in a patient mode with the whole process, and we don't necessarily feel something has to get done before the season. We're going to try to talk again some time in September."

Paxson said that he wants to see how his team plays this year before he starts writing big checks. Marcus Fizer is also due for an extension and next summer Tyson Chandler and Eddy Curry are eligible.

"I want all of our guys to know what really matters is how many games we win," Paxson said. "That determines how we'll proceed."</div>
