From NBA insider <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Pistons and Warriors are on the verge of consummating a trade that would send forward Cliff Robinson to the Golden State for veteran combo guard Bob Sura, a league source told Insider. The trade would give the Warriors a veteran to pair with second-year forward Mike Dunleavy at the small forward position. The Warriors traded away their other two small forwards, Antawn Jamison and Chris Mills, on Monday in a deal with the Mavericks. The trade does a couple of things for the Pistons. Sura will replace departing shooting guard Jon Barry in the backcourt. Sura's ability to play both the one and the two gives the Pistons greater flexibility on the perimeter. The move also gets the Pistons further along in their goal of clearing cap space for the summer of 2004. Sura is in the last year of his contract.</div> Nice trade..It helps our cap room for next season..and it gives us a replacement for Jon Barry....good luck in GS cliffy...
good trade for both teams. pistons will really miss cliff though. he was a great PF who helped the pistons a lot. detriot will now also open up the PF spot for other players such as Milicic, Campbell, Okur, Rebraca and williamson.
Great move by Detroit, as it adds depth to their G spot, as well as make them a good perimter shooting team(well, even better...). Billups(35)/Atkins(13) Hamilton(35)/Sura(13) Prince(30)/Williamson(18) Wallace(35)/Williamson(5)Milicic(8) Campbell(20)/Okur(15)Rebracca(10)(Milicic(3) Thats roughly what it could play out as. Smart move to get a reliable backup SG to replace Barry.
i thought they would have been smarter to have just resigned barry but i guess cap wise it wouldnt have worked. therefore, the sura trade was good.
OFFICAL.... http://www.nba.com/warriors/news/acquire_cliff_robinson.html <div class="quote_poster">Quote:</div><div class="quote_post">The Golden State Warriors have acquired forward/center Clifford Robinson and guard Juan “Pepe” Sanchez from the Detroit Pistons in exchange for guard Bob Sura, general manager Garry St. Jean announced today. Robinson, a 14-year NBA veteran who has appeared in the playoffs every year of his career, has averaged 15.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.11 steals and 1.09 blocks in 1,097 regular season games. In 81 games this past season (69 starts), Robinson averaged 12.2 points, 3.9 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 1.07 steals and 1.09 blocks in 34.9 minutes per contest, helping lead the Pistons to the best record in the Eastern Conference. Additionally, he started all 17 of the Pistons playoffs games en route to an appearance in the Conference Finals. Sanchez, 6-4, has appeared in 38 NBA games over two seasons with Atlanta, Philadelphia and Detroit, averaging 0.5 points in 4.9 minutes per contest. He became the first Argentine to play in the NBA when he made his NBA debut for the Hawks on October 31, 2000 after signing with Atlanta as an undrafted free agent. Sura, an eight-year NBA veteran, averaged 7.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.2 assists for the Warriors this past season, appearing in 55 games. Overall for his career, he has averaged 8.6 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.7 assists in 516 contests with Cleveland and Golden State</div>
<div class="quote_poster">Quoting txuonline:</div><div class="quote_post">i thought they would have been smarter to have just resigned barry but i guess cap wise it wouldnt have worked. therefore, the sura trade was good.</div> Resigning Barry would have meant keeping Robinson, something they no longer wanted to do. So they let Barry go, then traded Robinson for a replacment. Its a cheaper, better move on their part. Sura- $6.1 million Robinson- $4.7 million Barry- ? My guess is Barry is making somewhere in the $3 million area(bec. Denver had to outbid other teams by more than average to convince him to go to Denver, and bec. Denver is still below the minimum team salary, so they probably had to overpay to get their current figure near the minimum salary. Id expect a $6-8 million/2 year contract for Barry as a result). Lets say Barry is paid $3 million this season. Add that to Robinsons' 4.7, and that comes out to be $7.7. So by doing it this way, Detroit saved themselves $1.6 million. Might not seem like much, but it reduces payroll next season(Sura is an expiring contract), and puts them below the luxury tax threshold(which still hasn't been decided......so it could potentially save them even more money). Plus, they really wanted to dump Robinson in order to get PT to Okur, Campbell, and Milicic.
Barry signed a 1 year 2 million deal with the Nuggets...This trade really does give us space for next off-season....We also needed to get rid of a big man as we are full at that area....Sura is a good player and averaged more than Barry did so replacing JB points was not a problem and it really helped us for cap reasons..It would of been a good trade even If we got a bench warmer back...So getting a back-up for rip being Sura is a good deal...
After this season, Detroit has plenty of off-season options. Their salary cap, should they renounce all their FA's, would be at $35 million(including their draft picks). My guess is Curry, Davis, Sura, and Rebracca all get shown the door. Rebracca isn't really of need anymore, with Williamson, Wallace, Campbell, Okur, and Milicic able to play the 4/5. Okur is a FA though, and expect him to draw interest from plenty of teams. There will be some teams, as always, willing to gamble on him. Id expect a few teams to offer him their entire MLE. Detroit will have to pay him somewhere in the $5 million area to keep him. That would push the team cap to $40 million, which should be anywhere from $5-$10 million below the salary cap level(depending if it increases at all, and if so, by how much....) Garnett will be a FA then, as well as Kobe. But don't expect Garnett nor Kobe in Detroit. They'd have to take a significant pay cut to come to Detroit. Doubt that happens. If Detroit opts not to resign Okur at that range, they will have anywhere from $10 to $15 million to go after a FA. Again, thats getting closer to Kobe/Garnett country, but I doubt that happens either. Garnett just got a bunch of help in Minnesota, and might not want to leave there. I don't see Kobe leaving either. But Detroit can gamble here. If they renounce all their FA's, they can try to obtain a Garnett or Kobe. If not, they will be enough under the cap to outbid teams(since they no longer have the bird rights since they renounced their FAs) for Okur, should they want him back. Or yet another option is to let Okur, Davis, Sura, and Okur walk. And sign Rebracca ar a $3 million or so salary(which is what it will probably take). That would push their cap total to $38 million. Which is still anywhere from $7 to $12 million below the team cap level. Plenty of room to land a good player or 2. Or yet another option is a trade. A team might trade Detroit a player with a larger contract, and give them another young prospect for taking the contract on.(as incentive). Detroit will be able to absorb the contracts. So, Detroit has plenty of options. I am going to try to find a list of potential FAs, and post some potential signings, if anyone is interested.
I'm disappointed in the Pistons, they did not take advantage of Cohen's stupidity. I'm sure they could have got J-Rich. On a serious note, I think the trade is good for both teams. Sura has been injured far, too often in Golden State and has fallen out of their guard rotation. With Van Exel, Speedy, Pietrus & J-Rich, there just are not enough minutes to fit in Sura. Cliff Robinson gives the Warriors a big man who can actually shoot from beyond 10 feet and is still a solid defender. The Warriors also want the cap relief Cliff will provide in 2 years. Sura will fill the void Barry left as mentioned perfectly above by Allnet & Vintage. I read an article and I think it explains a lot of the insanity we have seen the past few days regarding the Warriors. Simply put, they are going to go after Yao Ming. The effort they are making now and the 2 year sacrifice is part of a plan to land Yao and bring him to the Bay Area, which has a large Asian population.

And like I said, Detroit made a good move. Letting Barry go enabled them to make a trade for a backup SG who is probably even better. And losing Robinson wasn't a negative..........they wanted him gone.
How about the reuniting of Allen Iverson and Larry Brown? Joe Dumars is a genius and is re-writing the book on how to GM in this league.
That would push Hamilton out. Hamilton cannot play SF. Iverson is better than Hamilton, no doubt. But Hamilton is an above average starter. Why replace him? Id look to find a better SF than Prince. Yes, star power is needed......but if you could land a star SG or a star SF, a star SF is more of need in Detroit.
Next year the top free agents are: KG, Kobe, AI, Walker, Marbury, Sheed, Nash, K-Mart, McDyess, Divac, Payton, Spree, Malone, Clark, Foyle, Snow, B. Barry How about Rasheed in a Piston uniform? A front court of Sheed, Darko, and Big Ben would be good enough to compete against the West.
Yes it would. And the best part of it would be that Rasheed is going to have to accept a pay cut. A pretty big one, at that. I think his salary will be in the $8 million/year area. He could play SF fine for you. He'd give an inside scoring presence and an outside one too. Good defender. Head case? Yes. But that lineup would be enough to surpass NJ, and make a strong title run.
I would love Sheed in a Pistons jersey...Only thing that would concern me is team chemistry..Pistons have been known for great team-work and chemistry....But if it does work Sheed could be great in the East..I think he is in a team now with loads of talent so maybe he isn't showing the skills we know he has...He just needs a fresh start...I expect Blazers to trade him as I doubt he will return and the Blazers will want something back as they have made it quite clear they want Zach Randolph as their future PF...Maybe trade him for a PG and a decent C?

Do you have a link to this article?
It's good for Detroit since they have too many big men anyways. I think Okur's game is alot like Cliff's. He's a big man who can shoot from outside or post up. Except that he's younger and bigger. I think Detroit had to make some space in the frontcourt because with Darko, they have too many big men. Plus Sura is a good backup player for them. The weirdest thing about the Piston's offseason was firing Coach Rick Carlisle. The guy gets two 50 win seasons, puts your team deep into the playoffs and you pay him back by firing him? btw some team should of jumped on his ass as soon as he was let go.
